Sunspot in AR2833 on June 14

Post by gabrieli »

The sun occasionally broke through clouds despite the weather forecast predicting rain. Most of the time was spent waiting for the sun to peek through for 10 - 15 seconds.

I used a Baader 3.8 filter on a 180 Mak + 2X Powermate + Sulphur II filter + Blackfly S 3.2 Mp camera.

Sulfur II ! It's nice to see the less used filters get action here. WL, Ca II K and Ha may get the bulk of the solar data here but I feel that less used wavelengths certainly have something to add. Thanks for sharing these!!

Interesting, Lou. Is it a particularly narrow bandwidth, or wide enough for continuum bleed through?

Nice images.

Hi, Stu

The filter's bandwidth is 8nm at 673 nm. I decided to obtain one in a roundabout way.

I was always interested in trying to calm atmospheric seeing by using longer wavelengths for white light or pseudo white light imaging.

I once trying sandwiching a Baader 685 nm long pass with a UV/IR blocking filter since these 2 filters hand bandpasses that overlapped and produced a bandpass of around 670 nm (fwhm undetermined). This combination produced significant calming and it passed enough light to be useful but somewhat dark for higher resolutions.

I researched and found that Baader had a very narrow (8nm) Sulfur II filter that centred at 673 nm. It was brighter than the 685nm+UV/IR combination and did almost as good a job in atmospheric calming. I will always use it for higher resolution "white light" imaging (I mean it looks like white light).
