June 16 2021 Observations and quickie Imaging session.
Session time is from 15:00 UTC until 16:30 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy and the temperature is 73F. The seeing is well above average.
Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44x, 64x and 88x. ( Ha )
The most obvious thing on the disc by far is the system of AR12833. The spot looks like it's riding on the back of a cat-shaped plage! Head pointing SE and long tail pointing NW. I can see two easy filaments SE of AR12833. An easy filaprom lies at the limb to it's NE. Another filament is located far to the NNW.
I can see a second small plage in the NW quadrant. A filament lies to it's NE. The southern hemisphere shows a slight ruffled appearance. The mottling is less smooth there than in the north.
I see a number of prominences on the limb. An easy filaprom in the NE. 64x and 88x shows decent detail within it. I see a couple of nice proms in the NW. One looks like a birds head facing south with a dark eye and stubby wings! The SW shows a nice group of proms. Two look like horns with a bright patch of plasma between their tips!
The mottles are easy and I can easily see the limb spicule layer.
I had the iPhone handy and did manage to pick up the filaments, filaprom, AR12833 and Bird-Heads prom with it! Two images are cropped from a larger image.
Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x, 110x and 166.5x ( WL )
The spot of AR12833 shows nice detail today. The Penumbra shows mottling and radial structure! I can also see a couple of tiny pores close by. I can see it's faculae trailing off towards the limb. I can also see a faint patch of faculae in the SE. I also found a very tiny pore in a faint patch of faculae in the NW. SDO shows it to be a close double but I couldn't split them apart cleanly. Finding this one was a challenge. Ha shows a tiny plage at this location. Apart from AR12833 the Sun is very calm.
I can see the individual granules at 110x and 166.5x and pick up the granulation easily at 55x. The contrast is low on them at high powers and it takes a close look to see the individuals.
I am listening to Ryan Farish, Halcyon album today.

Re: June 16 2021 Observations and quickie Imaging session.
Hi James,
Thank you for your detailed visual reports. I only came over to 'the bright side' late last year with aLS50. Last month I upgraded to a LS80 with binoviewers (I have just done an equipment review of bino eyepieces). I can now see much more detail but still do not recognise all the subtle surface features. Your detailed report is very useful because I compare what I have seen to your report and it really helps me to 'get my eye in', understand what I am seeing and how different features are linked.
Alexandra suggested that I obtain a copy of Jamey Jenkins Observing the Sun book. I think my kids are getting it for Fathers day this weekend so that should help me.
Please keep up the good work, its greatly appreciated
John

AR12833_Greyscale is my fav James as well as the report.
Here now lots of rain and was hoping for the forecasted thunderstorms, but they never came up far-enough from the English Channel, so having set-up two lots of cameras and waiting patiently, I've decided that I won't get anything tonight.
Thanks for sharing
Terry

Re: June 16 2021 Observations and quickie Imaging session.
John,
You using my reports as a guide is probably the biggest compliment anyone can give me. It's actually quite hard to describe clearly what I see in the telescope. I am glad it's worded clear enough and you find them of use. And all of my observations are without a binoviewer!
Terry,
The AR12833_Greyscale image is not by me...I wish...But an SDO image. But I like it too. I could actually see a bit more detail in the spot today than it shows!
Dan,
Seeing was certainly good today. I have had a few days better but many, many more worse!
Thanks everyone!
James

James, it was an interesting day and a great record to prove it.
Every time I am amazed at your ability to see the subtle details that I can only see in a photo.

Re: June 16 2021 Observations and quickie Imaging session.
Jochen,
I have done some decent white light images with the iPhone but not that good. This one is a crop from a 4K SDO image. I slipped and forgot to label it SDO like I usually do. It is a nice image though. I could actually see finer detail visually with the 4" refractor!
Ivan,
When observing I keep a current GONG image close by on a computer or my smartphone to use as a guide at the scope. That way I can see what is there and what to look for. This is especially helpful to me. In addition to my phone and laptop I also have a desktop just inside the house that's easily accessible when I observe on the back deck. Also, the more you do it the more you will see. Your eye learns how to see and your brain learns how to process the data.
Alexandra,
Yep. I do seem to see a lot of animals on the solar prairie. I'm on " solar safari " I guess.
