Animation of Penumbral Waves

Post by H-Alpha »

Hi all,

In the post with the 1h animation of two days ago (17 June 2021), Filip made an interesting observation and comment. He noted that Penumbral waves were visible around the spot. I didn't know about this phenomenon neither the term until that moment. Excited that somebody show me something new to me, I wanted to share it with you. It seems there are several scientific papers about the penumbral waves.

They were just visible in my original animation and the experienced eye of Filip got them. I played much faster the animation et Voila! They are much better seen now in the cropped Gif, especially in the northern part of the spot.

PLEASE give the animation the time to load properly. It is 1 hour animation.

If somebody wishes to add a few more words about the Penumbral Waves is very welcome!

Best wishes,
Alexandros

Thanks for providing the crop at higher frame rate.
Th waves are clear to see.
Cheers.

WoW!! This is amazing! Proof that amateurs can do professional quality work. It's amazing what we can now image and nothing reveals the Sun like a good animation does. I wonder if anyone here has captured Moreton waves?

Thanks a lot Peter, James, Stu,

@James: Thanks for the link on Moreton_waves! The solar Tsunamis! Let's see if we will observe and record them the following years towards the maximum ;-)

Best wishes,
Alexandros

Thanks a lot James and Ivan,

@James: Many thanks once more. Hope to be able to have a proper Barlow or telecentric soon, to make magnified animations. Better and larger penumbral waves will be a feasible goal then. It is still not clear for me if FFC or Baader telecentric 4X or some other Barlow would be the best choice.
;-)

Best wishes,
Alexandros

Fabulous work! :bow :hamster: Moreton waves are a little more difficult, you have to be doing continuous animations of the whole Sun to achieve this. This was studied by Thomas Ashcraft in the USA who has seen this many times http://www.heliotown.com/Moreton_wave_Ashcraft.html

Thanks a lot Alexandra!
Your link helps a lot. I thought they last much more time, but if only some 5-10 minutes, the chances to capture them one day increases. Of course they do not occur so often and much luck is needed, but as the solar activity will be increasing until the maximum, maybe someone of our community making long animations may capture them. Of course as you say the animation should cover a very large portion of the sun around an active area and have the chance to capture the flare that will produce them. ;-)
Best wishes,
Alexandros
