June 19 2021 Observations. Nice seeing!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time today is from 14:14 to 15:41 UTC. The skies are mostly cloudy with high clouds preceding an approaching tropical system coming up from the Gulf of Mexico. The seeing is well above average bordering on excellent! The temperature is 79F

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x, 64x and 89x ( Ha )
The system of AR12833 just west of the LCM in the northern hemisphere is easy today. The brightest part of it's plage lies south of the spot. I can also easily see a long filament south of this system and another E-SE of it.

AR12834 is barely visible as a mere disturbance in the NW approaching the limb.

Elsewhere on the disc I see a couple of filaments in the NW and a large diffuse one in the NE. I also see a couple close together in the far SSE.

The limb is fairly quiet on prominences today. I see a twin spike on the NW limb and another small one on the SW limb. There is also a small hedgerow on the SE limb.

The mottles are clearly visible today and the spicule layer is visible on the limb.

I used only double stack today.

Celestron NexStar 102 w/Altair wedge and 430nm and 540nm filters. 55x, 110x and 166.5x ( WL )
Observing the Photosphere was awesome today in the nice seeing I had. I can keep up with the 4K SDO HMI continuum reference image I am using. I can actually exceed it in the detail I can see in the large spot! The large spot of AR12833 shows really nice detail with mottling and radial lines in it's penumbra. The umbra shows texture, especially at it's edges. I can see all of the pores shown on the reference image. They encircle the large spot! I can also see the individual granules using the 540nm green filter. The 430nm violet filter shows the spot well and I can see some of the pores. Though I could detect the granulation using it I never could get the view the 540nm filter gave.

Due to it's location on the disc I cannot see faculae to AR12833 but I can see the faculae to the receding AR12834 in the NW. I can also see another patch of faculae in the SW.

Carpe Diem!

James

Thanks Ivan, Terry and Ella!

I love my Celestron NexStar 102GT refractor. A close friend bought it for 185 dollars as a Christmas gift. New! That was back in 2014. Not too long ago. I told him that was the best 185 bucks he ever spent! To go up to a six inch Celestron it would cost me probably around 600 dollars.

Here I am today with my beloved scope! :D . Before you think it, I have shorts on. I don't get into back deck naked observing

It looks like today is going to be cloudy so they will probably be no session from me today. I am going to visit my daughter, Sarah for Father's Day. I will carry my small Lunt 8x32 SUNoculars with me though in the small case that the sun comes out.

Thanks for all your replies, input and thanks here.

Terry,
Master? I would not go that far. Most imagers here surpass me! But thanks for the compliment!

Ivan,
The sun feels good warming one's chest and shoulders. I miss that during the cold days of winter when you have to dress up in layers of clothes to observe. But now the solstice has passed. Winter is coming...

Oh, James, please don't remind me of winter.
In winter, everything will end, the pressure tuner does not work well already at -5 Celsius. The wires do not bend. And of course, many, many clothes.

But most importantly, the sun is very low and it is almost always cloudy. It is easier to wait for spring, in my case it is the beginning of May or at best, rather than the end of April. I don’t know how to convey this.

Ivan,
Like a number of others on here you live at a more northern latitude than I do. Colder harsher winters and a lower sun. I feel for you. One's like you need a fixed observatory. Brian Colville is a good example. He observes/images from his home observatory in Canada.

Still, I don't look forward to winter. But we do have quite some time yet. Let's enjoy the summer sun while it's still high in the sky and warm outside!
