Solstice Sun! 6-20-21.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Today I did not get a solar session in due to the remains of tropical storm Claudette but I had to post something since it is a noteworthy day in the solar calendar. Today the Sun was at the Summer Solstice in the northern hemisphere which affects most of us here and the Winter Solstice in the southern hemisphere. In the north we can celebrate the highest sun of the year but it has a dark lining. After today the sun slowly starts it's slow creep south which in time brings on winter and it's colder weather and short days and the lower sun does make it so much harder to observe. Those in the south have the lowest sun of the year but know now that the sun starts to rise higher every day foretelling warmer days to come and easier observing times. So today let's celebrate the sun at a time it stands still!!

I was gone to my daughter's for most of the day for Father's Day or I would have posted this earlier.

I won't be going to Stonehenge for the Solstice event as I don't fancy the 4-hour drive, amongst other things...

As far as even seeing the Sun in the South of England today - not very likely...

Cheers
Terry

Terry,
I would love to visit Stonehenge for the summer solstice! I would also like to be chosen from a list to view the summer solstice sun come through the roofbox into the inner chamber of the Newgrange passage tomb located in the Bru Na Boinne complex in Ireland.

Yes James I agree it would be nice to visit either location, but with the English/Irish weather, Virus restrictions of our third-wave and as I understood-it not being actually allowed to tread amongst the stones themselves, would not entice me to make the trip.

Certainly the Bru Na Boinne complex does look very enticing though. Have been past Stonehenge on a few occasions and flown nearly-over it too..

Cheers
Terry

Terry,
There is so much history in the British Isles and Ireland, indeed the whole of Europe. The United States has nothing really to compare to it. Our country is realtively young by comparison and the natives did not leave magnificent monuments, structures, passage tombs and megaliths to the degree that the ancient peoples in Europe have. We certainly have nothing like the Stones of Stennis, Avebury, Newgrange or Stonehenge. And even the old churches of Europe pass ours in grandeur.

Feel lucky.

Thanks for the report James. Despite the significance of date, Stonehenge is definitely better not to go to on equinoxes and solstices. The solstice there the other day was swarmed with hundreds of people all wearing smelly blankets and thinking Covid isn't real the way they behaved.

Did you go during the Solstice, Mark? Or have you been? It seems too warm to wear or carry blankets! I thought Stonehenge was closed during the solstice this year, like Last year due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

I've been a couple of times, but not at solstice time, my brother used to work down there a while ago. It was closed this year, but the idiots just broke in as they think it's their right to do what they want when they want...

Absolutely agreeing with Mark, that unfortunately brains have been lacking at many events in England at least, as we are now well into a third-round/wave of the virus and largely due to those who simply don't understand or don't want to abide by the common-sense rules.
As for the temps James - overnight has been most around 10-degsC, with only around three-days of high temps for June, so really this has been a cold and fairly wet June...

England is certainly colder and wetter than we are here in the southern Appalachian mountains of North Carolina.
