WL AR2833 from 16th June

Post by Freddie »

Only second imaging session in just about a year as everything has been in storage whilst moving house. Took this on the afternoon of 16th June with my CPC9.25 and Baader film. Have posted up in JPEG to respect the latest image size request so not quite as good as the original but to be honest I was surprised by how little quality is lost when converting.

Cracking image, Freddie. That’s a great comeback after such a long break.

Congratulations Freddie! Fantastic photo of the spot!!!
The cells are so large and clear!
Did you use some 'Barlow'?
And did you have any SSM reading of your seeing?
Best wishes,
Alexandros

Thanks for all the kind comments. They are much appreciated.

To answer the questions.
I use a 2x Barlow and with this particular Barlow and the way I have things set up it is probably closer to 2.5x
I use Baader 3.8 film (the visual 5 film is useless for this type of imaging) and also use a Baader green filter from my planetary RGB set. I have a Baader continuum in the wheel but have never got on with it and get better results with the green. I think the ability to reduce the exposure time with the G outweighs the contrast given by the continuum. Contrast can be added in post processing.
I don’t have any SSM data, the seeing is what it is and I enjoy going out and seeing what I can get out of the captures each time I image. Some days they are all a bit mushy, some I end up with this. Though for each image, it’s 20 seconds to capture, 20 minutes to process!!!!

Stunning! :bow

Freddie,
Please forgive my ham-fisted "restoration" of your original masterpiece.
You deservedly received the accolades of your fellow imagers.

They say plagiarism is the highest form of flattery.
I prefer to call it being guided by the masters of their art.
I greatly respect your abilities and remain grateful for your sound advice early on in my imaging apprenticeship.

May I ask if my minor changes are an improvement over your original?
And if not, then why not? [N.B. There is no extra sharpening.]

I am trying to establish what makes a solar image "correct" or even "great."
In order to guide my own future processing.

Many images appear darker, simply because the software dictates it, for apparently increased sharpness.
Is it simply an illusion? Even undesirable? Simply a matter of taste?

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated.

“Rusted” I don’t think there will ever be an answer to “what is best/correct?” I think it will always come down to personal preference.
All I can do is say why I left my image as it was and not process further as you did. Looks like you changed the black point and bought it in a touch but the white point looks pretty much unchanged. Obviously as you know, a lot of processing went into getting the raw data to that point though.
I have two issues/comments with your version.
Looks like you have made a global change to the black point and in doing so have lost the subtle detail in the core of the spot. It is now all just jet black. I don’t see that as an improvement. I see a lot of images (Ha and WL) where the core is jet black when careful processing would retain the subtle detail. You could have just adjusted the contrast in the granulation and left the core untouched but that is my second issue/comment. I don’t think that level of contrast looks at all natural. I try to imagine what a sphere of boiling gas/plasma would look like and in my mind it is not that contrasty (if there is such a word!!!)
They are just my views and as said everyone will have their own option. Would be interesting to hear other opinions.

Freddie...

The details in the image are incredible...excellent work :bow

I tried to get more contrast outside of umbra/penumbra as well, and had the same issue of over darkening the sunspot details. I think it depends what features you want to emphasize. 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder'...process as you see it it looking best in your judgment.
