June 20th - Ha/CaK/WL

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi everyone...

My session on Sunday had better seeing than the previous day, thanks to getting out and starting earlier in the day. This allowed me to add in some WL and CaK images as well.

The first is the composite full disk Ha image, as captured through the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1800Ha solar scope and ASI174MM camera:
Full-Ha_06202021.jpg
Full-Ha_06202021.jpg (407.01 KiB) Viewed 574 times
I changed over to the Orion 130 to image the full disk in WL and CaK using the Lunt solar Wedge for WL and the modded Lunt B1800CaK wedge, all with the ASI1600MM camera. The CaK full disk image is shown below, but the WL version mage has gone missing :?

I added the 3x focal extender to get a more detailed set of images of AR2833 in WL and CaK:

The final images are the Ha images of AR2833 through the Orion 130/Daystar Quantum/4X Powermate and the ASI174MM camera:

This finishes off the images from the Sunday session.

Great captures Brian!
I loved your FD (no sign of being a compsite image; fantastic job!) and your WL!
Are you gathering SSM measurements of your seeing?
Best wishes,

Peter, Stuart, Franco, Mark, and Alexandros...

Thanks for all your comments and feedback on the images...always very much appreciated :bow

I wish I knew where the WL FD SER file went...I seem to recall Firecapture freezing once early on and maybe it was lost. Good to see the rest were saved ;)

Alexandra, I had the SSM setup but not setup to capture...if I recall the readings ran form 1 (very rare) into 5-6 range. Most of the time it was between 2-4.

Very nice images Mr. Colville. I especially love the white light view of AR12833. It approximates my visual view at higher powers using my Celestron 102. Yes, your granulation has better contrast making it easier to see but it still reminds me of my visual view in good seeing. What scope did you use for the WL view?

Hi James...

No need to be so formal, ;)

Nice to hear the image of the AR in WL was similar to your visual views...I used a similar scope as yours for years and always liked the views it provided (back when my eyesight was far better).

I used the Orion EON 130ED for the images (except the FD Ha )...it is a recent acquisition.

Brian,
That would be a nice scope and would have a resolution edge on my C102. I hope in the future to acquire a Celestron C6-R ( C150 ) or an Astro-Tech AT130EDT. The first is an achromatic doublet and the second an apochromatic triplet. I would like to have something bigger than the 4" for those few days of really good seeing.

Hi James...

The CR-6 OTA's do a very good job in solar work as many here are using them. I used one of the earlier version for many years, but changed to the Orion for a better deep sky instrument and still do the solar work. I'm too old and lazy to keep swapping OTA on and off the mount

Brian,
I am actually considering the C6-R above the AT-130EDT. It's less expensive and I do mostly solar now anyway plus it is 20mm larger in aperture than the 130. With narrowband observing/imaging the CA is not a problem since the filters remove it. I could also buy a Baader Fringe Killer or Semi-Apo filter for it for nighttime use to address the color error. My C102 gives remarkably sharp images in continuum and a bigger version in good seeing would only be an improvement.

James, if you are working in the narrow filter band-pass word the achromats do a good job in 'most' situations. My two 6" achros are great on the moon and planets, but I expect some violet on the likes of Jupiter or Venus, but I'm not expecting APO performance!
