Cataloguing of solar daily events

Post by davidem27 »

Hello everyone!
With the purchase of h-alpha telescope, I would like to start following the Sun activity as possible as I could.
While light and H-a are now accessible to me.

So I wonder how to manage the cataloguing of the images.

The best way could be the simplest in logic way: sorting the takes by days.
But as days passes over the months, the number of images would increase hugely.

So I am trying to wonder different ways of cataloguing like:

by events (full discs, proms, plagues and so on...)
by wavelength
by days

Obviously, a website could afford everyone among them. But for computer?

Sorting mumbling....

How do you face it? (if so...)

Hi,

Good question. I just save them on a daily basis.

Hi David,

So far I use the date and separate folders per day. I also have a "Best" folder In Flickr I created a separate album for animations. Recently, I started naming the files as 2021-6-23, Subject (WL or H-alpha and AR, FD, NE sun, NE proms etc.), then duration and frames if animation, and time at the end, e.g. 2021-6-23, NW Promineneces and AR12833, 17_15_19

Best wishes,
Alexandros

I have created a folder on my computer labeled " SolarMax " and in that folder I have other folders labeled by year. 2019, 2020, 2021 and another labeled " Edit " for storing images and AVI files for editing when I image. In the year folders I have the individual months of the year and then within the month folders I have the individual days. Within these I store my visual observation records, originally I photographed my hand written record books and then I moved on to using LibreOffice and typed them out. Now I use SolarChat! I simply save a capture of the post minus images, where I describe what I see. I also save the current images from the SDO and GONG that I use as guide images and if I get clouded out that day I save them anyway since I can go back to them and at least see what the sun was doing on that day. I also do occasionally save images from SolarChat since they often have a wealth of data within them and often outperform GONG. If it's not already there I add the imager's name or initials to the file name. I do not share them on any other site.

My goal is to follow the Sun and record it though an entire solar cycle. To at least transit cycle 25. And that takes keeping accurate records. I really appreciate SolarChat and it's members for helping me do this. My visual work is the base of my data but SDO/GONG and SolarChat members come to my aid too. I am grateful. I also of course use/save my own images as well. In addition to saving solar data on my computer I back up everything on iCloud Drive.

I have also a considerable amount of past solar work. All in white light. All recorded from visual observations and in handwritten recordbooks. I love this digital stuff. My writing sucks!

That is a really good question and it depends on what you want to get out of it in the end. Perhaps set up a daily blog post like LiveJournal and write up everything you see that day and include your images. Or do that on your computer in a Word file or Powerpoint presentation. Or simply have a folder for each day with all the images in and file them away.

I have folders for each day, also a folder for favourites which I add to so I can find exceptional pictures quicker. I also upload them to Flickr as backup and have folders for each wavelength. For anything exceptional I use these Flickr images to write up the event on LiveJournal. However, at the moment I am really struggling for time so everything is going to pot :(

Thank so much for your interesting replies.
I'm wondering of what could be my final goal.

The most fascinating aspect would be to get a daily diary.
But it is not achievable on computer, maybe...
At least, not as I would like to.

The final presentation (to me and to visitors) would be onto a easy website with tags and taxonomy about branches of images.

But, in computer, this is my actual (small) situation.

Sun (easy situation)

Jupiter (still easy)

Moon (medium situation)

David,
My iCloud Drive files are stored and look in a similar fashion. It's accessible and works. I also store files on my computer in a similar fashion.

Alexandra,
LiveJournal sounds like a good option. Is it free or do you pay for the service?

LiveJournal is free and you can upload your images via Flickr. If you were to upload onto their site then I think you do have to pay. A friend introduced me to this site and it is very easy to write a daily blog without having to own a website or how to code. I can highly recommend it.

David, although I cannot see your photos in the link, but only the thumbnails, it seems you have some fantastic shots of Jupiter and Moon!

What scope and accessories are you using for them?

All the best,
Alexandros

Davide your planetary and Lunar photos are just superb!!!
Congratulations!
You gave me lots of will to make some night planetary sessions... But the day has only 24 hours... :-(
I may come back to you for advice on Jupiter and Moon by Autumn. ;-)
Thanks a lot for sharing your photos,
Alexandros

You're welcome, Alexandros. Thanks for viewing!

Please feel free to ask anything you want to know.

I can feel your thoughts about quick Earth rotation :D
Infact, in the past year I started again, after 12 yrs, to take pictures of the sky (only planetary, please) and now the Sun is catching my attention.
My main passion is to go out in the dark sky and observing galaxies with my dob.
And...I am experiencing on my skin that covering and following everyone of these aspect is so tiring!

But, the sky is really full of joys, the life is one and we have to melt duties with hobbies.

All work and no play makes Davide a dull boy
