Flare on the Sun on 23rd June 2021

Post by cmas »

Well, I was still continuing to follow up on AR12833.

By a lucky chance I was imaging our Sun during this flare. I apparently missed the early part but at least I was able to catch some of this phenomenon. I added a blue circle to represent size of the Earth into the animation to show roughly the scale. Between the first and the last frame of the animation 445 seconds elapsed (total of only 4 frames as I only did 4 videos - I did not see the flare while imaging so I couldn't know). By measuring the distances from the surface I roughly estimated (I hope I did not make any grave mistakes) that in the first frame of the animation the flare was about 28 600 km above the apparent surface and in last frame the around 111 000 km above the apparent surface. This means that the parts of the flare visible at H-alpha moved around 82 000 km in 445 s which means an average velocity of about 184 km/s.

The images were quite difficult to process as especially in the last frame the flare was already really dim and I ended up making two animations. The first one shows the flare in a better way but the image is a bit too bright. The second one is created for showing the disk in a bit better way but it decreases the flare's brightness. The dynamic range between the flares seen in the first frame and in the last frame is a bit too much to make an aesthetically pleasing general solution for all the frames in the animation. I may go back to processing the images at some time but wanted to share these quite soon so here goes. I was experimenting with some settings during this session and I wasn't prepared to share anything and this is now very frustrating as the data is anything but easy to process.

Individual images are stacked from videos of 2541, 2989, 2911 and 3271 frames for animation frames 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively. Data was recorded at about 160 FPS, best 60 % is stacked for the final images. Date was 23rd June 2021 and this phenomenon was captured between 09:48:17 AM and 09:55:39 AM Finnish time.

Equipment: Baader D-ERF / Sharpstar 61 EDPHII / Daystar Quark / Daystar reducer / ASI 174 mm on a manual Alt-Az mount with no tracking.
Processed with Autostakkert3!, ImPPG and colored in Photoshop.

An interesting animated capture - which i believe might be the same area where a couple of spots were, but disappeared shortly after emerging over the limb.

Very nice animations. You really lucked out here! That little SharpStar 61 EDPH does well with a Quark!

Yep, indeed I was lucky. I just wish I wasn't playing around with the settings so much - there was so much potential. But I guess I just need to get back imaging and trying. It's gonna be cloudy here in Finland at least for the next few days. I think I need a break from the processing anyways :D

And I agree with DeepSolar64 about the little Sharpstar. I knew I was making quite a compromise to get my Quark set for full disks, but it turned out to be better than expected. Would be awesome to image full disk with my 80 mm but it ain't gonna happen easily.

A friend of mine has both the SS76EDPH and the SS94EDPH. Both are nice scopes. excellent performers.

Nice explosion and a lucky capture, indeed.
