New QUARK test, July 2 2021 AR12835 & 12837

Post by Valery »

Hi all,

It was about a year since I imaged the Sun last time (summer 2020).

On July 2 I managed to test my new Quark Chromosphere with very good homogeneity accross the FOV.
Here are two images (AR12835 and AR12837) taken with this Quark in a following set-up:
ARIES two band DERF D=140mm, SkyWatcher 150mm F/5 refractor, barlow lens which creates about F/35 with Quark's native 4.2x telecentric, focal reducer (about 0,65) and basler 1920-155 camera.

No flat fileld was applied. Contrast and brightness homogeneity are indeed so good that nothing to wish better.
And homogeneity does not changes with CWL tuning knob position changes within -5 to +5 positions.
Also this Quark is very narrow (less than 0.3A in my estimation).

Seeing was average and transparation was low, so low that I were need to rise the camera gain to nearly an upper limit and exposition to 8ms. Invividual frames are quite noisy and dim. I stacked 3500 frames to get a decent S/N.

Right click on the images to open them in a full resolution.

Thanks for looking.

Valery.

Excellent Valery !!
BTW, we can now get good estimations of the the FWHM of Ha filters with Sol'Ex spectrograph.

Great to see you back imaging, Valery.

Nice images. I was wondering how many Quarks you tested and rejected befor finding a good one

Thanks to all for your kind words.

To Christian. Nice to know that we some of us now can measure the FWHM of etalons we typically do use.
Question: have you measured your present mica spaced etalons and if yes, do they correspond to the declared FWHM? Same with air spaced etalons and other filters like BF and for CaK. If you have a time, please, give us your findings.

To Stu. I really don't know how many samples were tested. It was not me who tested them. BTW I believe this sample has better than 0,3A FWHM. I compared images taken with it with the images of the same ARs taken through etalons with known FWHM (0.2A, 0.3A and 0.4A).
My is somewhere in between 0.2A and 0.3A. Understandable that this is not really reliable estimations, but I do not have a better method.

Superb images! :bow

Is there any way for the humble imager to subjectively judge the quality of their etalons from their own [or other's] images?

Seeing conditions, aperture, objective, filtration, capture, processing and other factors obviously affect the average outcome.

How to judge etalon quality when conditions do allow the finest resolution?

When comparing etalons with intention to judge which is narrower, first of all I look at the filaments length and thickness. The longer and the thinnier filaments are, the narrower the etalon.  Second factor to look at is a "fullness" in the "desert areas ".  The third factor is a contrast between the spicules and surrounding areas - lesser contrast - better. And forth - contrast between the penumbra and surrounding areas.

Hope my english allows adequate understanding what do I mean.

Hello Valery,
Up to now, I have measured :
- one SM 40 mm
- two SM III 60 mm

And two Ca K filters :
http://astrosurf.com/viladrich/astro/in ... lters.html

I have two PST in the pipeline.

Valery:
Superb HR images.
As for my Ha filters, I just know that the old ATM that Del Woods made many many years ago is a 4.5A° etalon that has standed many decades and still works good.(this I have it at the rural observatory)
I also have a very old Daystar T-scanner of 4.5A°, that also Del made, and later Jen fitted it in a heated housing leaving the tilter on, this also still works well, though I am getting a central hotspot that could be cured with a new trimmer and blocker.(This I have it at my home observatory in Mexico City)
As for the big Aries ERF for the 10" f/20 TEC Maksutov, it is still in the mounting period, because I am making a cell to use it on the Meade 12" f/10 SCT., unfortunately my very good friend José Villicaña died and left some parts missing, so I am working on those, hope that for the winter period I will have everything ready to go.
Best regards and keep well my friend.
Eric.

Thanks for the info update and for good wishes.

Hope your etalons will work well on the 10" MCT.

PS. I believe your etalons are 0.45A°
