July 8 2021 WL only.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 17:00 to 18:00 UTC. The skies are mostly cloudy with observations being intermittent. The seeing is decent, a bit above average. The temperature is 79F ( 26.1C ).

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 50x and 62.5x ( WL )
The Sun is rather calm today. Still there is some to be seen. In the northern hemisphere just west of the Central Longitudinal Meridian just NW of the disc center I can see a single pore or small spot associated with AR12839. It's the only thing I can see of this active region. To the west near the limb I can see the faculae of AR12840 and the faculae of AR12837. I can see a tiny pore with certainty in the northern part of the faculae of AR12840! I can see another patch of faculae near the SW limb.

I can see a patch of faculae in the SE. I can see a tiny pore with certainty in the easternmost part of this facula. It's in the northernmost part of the small bright patch of faculae it's embedded in.

I find it amazing that this little inexpensive scope does so well. I wonder if all of these little 70mm Orion WL solar telescopes do this well of if I have gotten a really good one by chance. These pores are quite small. I did not expect to see them without the C102. In the past I have also gotten polar faculae with this tiny instrument. I would recommend these little scopes to anyone here. They would be superb with a focuser upgrade!

Carpe Lumen!

James

P.S. I wonder if Pedro Re' has one!?

Thank you James for your latest and yes it's becoming a tad quiet on the disk.. In fact this morning the Proms had it..

With regards your Orion 70mm, I have the Orion ED80T-CF for around three-years and is fine for night sky, but for Solar, there are items on the inside of the objective, which have failed to remove using vacuum-type systems. The objective can't be removed, due to the tube being carbon-fibre and what appears to be a glued-sealing.

Also other problems including a very bad designed method of having screws with rubber-tips to hold the rotatable-focuser to the main body/tube. These failed to remain tight enough and would unscrew on rotation of the focuser-assembly causing considerable looseness. My supplier failed to request a response from Orion, but I was able to use modified screws for the purpose, which have worked fine since.

That long-standing supplier is no-longer used for there now bad service.

So this scope (as used for the WL images) is to be replaced by another manufactured/new (type not be disclosed at present - until received - as now expected in the two or three weeks and to be reviewed before naming the type).

The ED80T-CF will be relocated to the new mini-observatory (on one of my Vixen mounts), which is currently in the process of having it's groundwork undertaken (in between showers of rain) !!

Cheers
Terry

Terry,
I hope I don't have to tear apart my Orion70 any time soon to find out if I have the issues you have had with yours.

Good luck on your new instrument. Keep us posted!

Great report James! I have had a different experience with my Orion ED80T CF than Terry. I have had mine for 10 years now and only have good things to say about mine. I use mine for WL and CaK imaging (as well as for DSO's) and have been pleased with the performance of it in these areas. I think that can happen with this level of scope where you can find a variety of different experiences depending upon the particular scope you end up with. I have heard others that were disappointed in the quality as well as folks that have had my experience and love the scope.

Varying quality and user experiences with the same brand/model of scope. I see the same here with DayStar and Coronado as well. Many talk about the issues with the DayStar Quarks with some getting good ones and others won't even come on band. Then some are really good! Then there is Coronado. Pre-Meade being top notch and Meade being hit and miss and cutting corners. I do understand that consistent high quality should be a goal but everyone cannot afford high end equipment which usually has few issues and has much better quality control. Still, the Quark or Coronado etalon, or for than matter any etalon should still work acceptably. This goes for scopes too. We cannot expect Takahashi performance out of a entry level scope. Should a 1200 dollar Quark equal an 8000 dollar Solar Spectrum etalon? No. Like most things you get what you pay for!

My Coronados got me in the Ha ballpark.

And sometimes one gets lucky. My Orion70 does really well at an entry-level price!

Hi James,

What you manage to see is incredible. Your reports of observations at WL with a small telescope are always interesting for this very reason.

I had no experience of observing in Orion, but I tried to shoot WL in Megrez90 with an aperture filter and I failed every time I tried to repeat. The spots were barely visible, there was no talk at all about the pores.
So you are definitely lucky to have him.

Thanks again for the report.

Ivan

Thanks everyone for you input and replies. My little Orion70 won't quite keep up with the AT72EDII with the wedge but it's close. The wedge has a bit more contrast than the glass filter of the Orion70 does and the brightness can be controlled with the wedge but the wedge alone cost more than the Orion70 OTA did! That little scope is a " cheaper keeper "! I think Stephen Ramsden has one too. I think I saw it in one of his videos a while back.
