July 14 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 15:00 to 16:10 UTC. The skies are mostly cloudy. Seeing is fair. The temperature is 77F ( 25C ).

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x and 33x ( Ha )
I can see five plages on the Sun today. AR12842 in the NW with a visible spot, AR12841 is on the LCM in the south. I can also see two plages west of it in the SW quadrant. The NW also shows a single small nondescript plage.

I can easily see a long dark broken filament in the NE quadrant. It ends at the limb at a prominence but I cannot see a connection between the two at the low magnification I am using. I see another patch of filament in the far NNE. I can see a faint broken filament in the SE.

I can see prominences in all 4 " corners " of the disc. The NE shows a group near the ending of the long filament. The NW shows some nice spreading-branching proms on the limb. These would have been nice with the SMII90. The SW shows a wide-spread grouping of proms on the limb. The SE shows two proms. A small one north and a large bright one south.

The mottles are easily seen today.

Astro-Tech AT72EDII w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 24x, 48x and 72x ( WL )
The spot of AR12842 in the NE is easily seen. It's umbra has a deep indention on it's western side. A penumbra surrounds the umbra. Two pores are seen SE of AR12842 and are separate from it. It's a new region! One is easily seen but the other proved difficult. This surprised me because they both looked the same in size and darkness on the SDO HMI continuum image. I can see an easy spot with a large pore located in the SW quadrant.

I see no faculae on the disc today.

Granulation is visible but does not stand out.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Thank you James and those three-tree proms are perhaps the order of the day.

Cheers

It was but the clouds softened the view a bit. About 10 minutes after I brought the scopes in, it came a downpour!

Thanks for the great description, James. Your opinion about what you see is always valuable and interesting. Your persistence is stronger than a downpour. I wish you a clear sky.

Persistence requires patience. Something you must have while waiting clouds out. ;)

Thanks and you are welcome

James
