Quick CaK FD 19th July 2021

Post by Carbon60 »

Just time for a quick Ca II K FD this morning as we were heading out for the day.

Our old friend the X-class flaring sunspot is back (AR2838) and can just be seen on the eastern limb. Presumably it will be named AR2846 this time around. Let's hope it remains potent.

Thanks for looking.

Stu.

I never have figured out why they re-number them when they know it's the same system seen before.

Nice CaK images, Stu. As usual.

Thanks Stu for your captures and the returning 2838 advice, which is now confirmed as AR2846 and may well have at least three-spots.

Hi James, the reason for re-numbering AR's as long as they produce spots, is that whilst on the 'dark-side' may well (and often do) change their format of spots etc.

If they are not renumbered, then more confusion will exist as to why an old-numbered AR's appears on the same visual-disk that other new numbered-regions co-exist and when things get really-busy (around Solar-Maxima) - there could well be so many numbered AR's with spots (coming and going) that it seems better to re-number those 'dark-side' AR's.

I suppose that the possibility of using "AR2838/AR2846" could assist following a specific AR., but then more computer-space would be required.

Also as and when the second STEREO satellite was available for 'dark-side' monitoring, then at least what happens there would also/often add new AR's which might not appear at the Eastern-Limb...

I hope that makes sense James ??

Regards
Terry
