Sunday July 18th Session - Full disks/WL/CaK

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

The past week has been very busy and limited my time to post. Work is still busy as the wet weather has delayed field work and to top it off there were 5 tornadoes in Central Ontario last Thursday (July 15th). On the scale of violent storms there were on the low side of the Enhanced Fugita scale...4 were rated EF2 (180km/hr winds) and the larger one was EF3 (220Km/hr winds). 2 of these storms hit within 10Km of my place and caused severe damage to the farms of several customers. This pales in comparison to the floods and loss of life in Europe!

Astronomy is currently limited by sky conditions...smoke from wildfires in the western US and Canada has been drawn over the Great Lakes by the jet-stream making a milky gray-white sky that barely has enough light to cast much of a shadow. Sunday started off with a small amount of smoke and lots of haze from the high humidity. but the skies steadily deteriorated to the point you could barely see the moon in the clear sky. Deep sky imaging is out for a while until the airflow patterns change the smoke spread :( This is what the late afternoon sun looked like today:

Anyway, back to the Sunday images. The full disk images in WL and CaK were taken through the Orion EON 130ED using a Lunt Solar Wedge/Baader Continuum filter and a Lunt B1800CaK/Baader K-Line filter set with the ASI1600MM camera. I now have one of the Moonlite focusers setup on the Orion scope so I can remotely control focus, and avoid the jiggles!:

The Ha views did not show a lot of proms, but there were 5 AR's and several string of filaments:

I added a 3x focal extender to the the Solar Wedge and CaK filter sets and imaged the main AR's in greater detail. Starting in the north-west quadrant, AR2842 was the largest and most detailed region:

To the west of this AR was a small area that showed up, but no significant activity to warrant a number:

AR2842 was in the south-west quadrant:

The south-east limb had 2844 rotate into view recently as well:

A single spot also was visible in the north-east, another un-numbered region:

I will post the Ha images in another post when I have more time to upload them. I manged to get the Lunt DSII etalon single and double stack working on the 130mm OTA, so there will be a few variations of the Ha setup to cover.

Really nice images Brian despite the smoky haze! We have had those same skies here in Michigan.

Thanks Warren...much appreciated :bow

Looking out tonight I see the moon is a deep blood red colour...no stars visible.

Brian,
Despite the very smoky conditions, your images turned out well. That's one great thing about the Sun, it'll penetrate more murky skies than anything else!

I am glad the tornados missed you. That had to be a bit scary!

Blessings:

James

Glad you and Sandy came out of the storms unscathed Brian, right where we are we seem to have missed all the weather that caused the flooding in London and then flooding and loss of life in Europe. Interesting about the smoke in the jet stream, be interesting to see if it makes it's way to our shores later in the year. You got a nice set of images there!

Oh dear Brian, sounds like North America is really getting the extreme weather as well. I am so glad the tornadoes missed you, did you see them at all? I remember a sky like that in 2017 when we visited Crater Lake, beautiful but in a terrible way.

Glad you managed to get some solar images though :bow :hamster:

Hi everyone...

Thanks for all the feedback and support...always very much appreciated :bow

The weather around the globe has been wild lately, with the dry weather making the west cost fire season much worse and the floods in Europe. The tornadoes we had are more common, associated with severe thunderstorms. I did not witness these, but when I look back on my travels that day I wasn't far from one. Unless you are very close you don't get the winds and flying debris...which is just as well and a lot of the time they are hidden in rain and you don't see them until the last minute. I have been very close to a couple in my day and it is an interesting experience.

Brian:
A good session in spite of those weather conditions, it is very hard to get good images when you have all those seeing problems.
I am suffering the same kind of weather plus high atmospheric contamination at the city.
Best wishes my friend.
Eric.

Thanks Eric :bow

I hope clear and steady clear skies returned to you! Our skies have cleared up significantly since the smoke has moved on after the jetstream shifted.
