AR12842 in Ha _250mm RCT

Post by Carbon60 »

Alexandra kindly let me use her solar imaging spot in her garden this morning after I mentioned that I was looking to try a different location given the difficulties I've been having with my local seeing conditions.

Immediately I could tell there was an improvement compared with my own, although time was slipping away as early cloud prevented an early start and the conditions were getting worse almost by the minute. Alexandra's SSM was displaying brief periods of <1 arc second and some fleeting glimpses at <0.5, although the seeing conditions generally were all over the map, well north of 2 arc seconds.

21 SER captures in total gave me only a couple of decent stacked images, but that's enough to demonstrate to me that the setup works. All I need to do now is figure out a way of increasing the shutter speed so as to really freeze the action. My current setup requires 11ms for each frame.

Anyhow, here's the resulting best overall image, processed in mono and colour depending on your taste. Best viewed if you click through to my Flickr page.

These are great Stuart :bow :bow :hamster: such a pity the clouds didn't budge sooner, but at least they did in the end even if the seeing wasn't the best :)

Thanks for the company, it really made my year :hamster:

This turned out well. How much gain are you running on the camera?

Hi Mark,

I kept gain to an absolute minimum in this case. Sometimes I do tweak this a little bit, but keep it low.

I've removed the red filter from the front of the etalon housing to allow more light through, but can't think of anything else 'easy' to make a significant impact.

Hi Arne,

I usually capture 5000-7000 images per SER and then stack 1, 5 and 10% in AS!3.

Easy, ramp the gain up. Even without powering the camera I can run gain up at 1/3 to 1/2 way along the slider no probs. The Basler is a fine camera and will take moderate gain no problem.

Gain is the same principle as a volume knob on an amplifier, it's designed to be used / turned up...
