July 21 2021 Observations
Session time is from 14:30 to 15:30 UTC. The skies are mostly clear but hazy. The seeing is variable but mostly below average. The temperature is 73F ( 22.8C ).
Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 64x ( Ha )
Today the Sun is quite active. I can see 6 plages on the solar disc! AR12842 and AR12845 are located in the NW and SW quadrants of the disc respectively. I can see a filament associated with AR12845. AR12844 is in the SE approaching the Central Longitudinal Meridian. It has an easy filament visible in it's northwest extremities. AR12847 is easily seen near the SE limb. AR12846 is easily seen in the NE with a couple of spots and a filament visible. To it's SW is another bright bi-polar plage.
I can see two dark filaments in the north-central--north west part of the disc. I can also see a few small ones in the southern hemisphere with one being very close to the SW limb.
I can see bright but small prominences on the SE limb. They look like the type heralding the arrival of an active area. I notice changes in this area in the hour that I observe. The NE limb shows 4 located close together. The NW shows a single bright but small prom on the limb. GONG Cerro Tololo shows some fainter ones on the SW limb but observing only in doublestack today I could only pick up one of them. Single stack tends to be better at picking up fainter prominences.
The mottles are easy today and the spicule layer can be seen.
Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge + 540nm filter. 55x and 83x ( WL )
I can see seven systems in continuum!! AR12842 in the NW shows 5 spots/pores to my eye that are surrounded by faculae. I can see a penumbra associated with the westernmost spot. AR12845 shows 4 to my eye with an elongated spot structure lying in it's SE part. Faculae are easily seen with this system. I can faintly see the faculae to AR12844 in the SE. AR12847 in the far SE appears as two spots amid a bright patch of faculae. The faculae are centered on the SW spot of the group. Just NE of AR12847 I see a patch of faculae at the limb. I was right assuming those small bright active prominences heralding an approaching active area at the SE limb. I could not see the plage there in Ha but I could see it's faculae at 540nm continuum. SDO HMIc shows a pore within it but seeing prevented me from picking it up visually. AR12846 in the NE looks nice. I can see two spots easily. The largest one sports a penumbra! I can glimpse a pore, maybe two to it's NE. Faculae is seen trailing off the system to the NE. SW of AR12846 an unnumbered system shows two easy dark spots. I can intermittently glimpse pores between them.
I can see the granulation today though it's soft at times due to seeing.
No music playing today. I am listening to the birds but the often heard apple sprayers are also all to easily heard.
Carpe Lumen!

Re: July 21 2021 Observations
What an interesting and detailed description, James. It's always great when there is something to see and tell. For the last three days I have only seen the Sun on Solarchat and GONG. Your description inspired me with a lot of activities. I hope I can get to this party tomorrow.

Hey there James! Good to hear from you and thanks for the report. Activity looks good at the moment and seems to be more coming round the limb in the coming days. Hot, sunny and hazy here (30c), but before long it will break, that's what the weather here does!

Re: July 21 2021 Observations
Ivan,
I am glad my work is an inspiration to you. That really makes it worth doing! Good luck on sunny skies tomorrow.
Mark,
You are welcome. We have actually averaged a bit below average here in temperature this summer. 27.8C I think is the highest temp I have recorded on any solar observation thus far. I wish you cooler weather, clear skies and steady seeing!

Re: July 21 2021 Observations
Thank you Stu and Maurits. Taking notes and recording what you see helps improve your skills as a visual observer. Have a notebook or smartphone on hand to take notes and a currant GONG or SDO image to help guide you along at the scope. Like imaging, visual skills are learned and take time to get good at. While I cannot do as well as a good image I sometimes surprise myself on what I can see. I like a good challenge!
Goodnight
