July 23rd - All Wavelenghts

Post by MapleRidge »

Good day everyone...

Friday offered me a a chance to image throughout the morning and early afternoon as I was off work that day trying to hit 'reset' on my diabetes control that suffered immensely over the spring rush at work. A relaxing day away form work, solar observing, and some fresh insulin in my applicator pens has helped ;)

The smoke/haze from the wildfires on the west coast and Northern Ontario had cleared away offering nice clear blue skies again, but the seeing was quite poor which prevented the best performance. I was still happy with the results. There were seven AR's on the disk, though AR2842 & AR2845 were almost out of view on the western limb.

The first images are full disks taken with the ASI1600MM camera, starting with the Ha using the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1800Ha and a 1.5x barlow ahead of the camera for the composite below:

The WL and CaK images were through the Orion EON 130, using a Lunt Solar Wedge/Baader Continuum and Lunt B1800CaK filter sets:

I added a 3x focal extender to the WL/CaK filters to image the areas of interest in greater detail:
Starting in WL, the regions on the eastern disk are shown below, but I missed grabbing the activity in SW:

AR2847-2849_WL.jpg
AR2847-2849_WL.jpg (518.37 KiB) Viewed 303 times
I managed to get the SW region in the CaK series:
AR2846-284_CaK.jpg
AR2846-284_CaK.jpg (901.26 KiB) Viewed 303 times
AR2847-2849_CaK.jpg

AR2844_CaK.jpg
AR2844_CaK.jpg (441.14 KiB) Viewed 303 times
After these filters were complete, I changed 130mm OTA with the DS mod for a 2nd light with the system. Due to the poor seeing I decided to use the 2.5x Power mate and ASI290MM camera. It allowed the exposures to be relatively short to help combat the seeing while keeping a FOV large enough to frame most of the features (some mosaics still used). The following images highlight the main AR's as you work around the limb clockwise starting at the large group consisting of AR2846/2484:
AR2846-284_Ha_290.jpg
AR2846-284_Ha_290.jpg (366.83 KiB) Viewed 303 times
AR2842 was barely noticed on the NW limb, but it was followed by a trail of small filaments:
AR2842_Ha.jpg
AR2842_Ha.jpg (237.41 KiB) Viewed 303 times
AR2845 was equally obscure in the SW and has a few small filaments in the same FOV too (these two areas show best in the CaK image):
AR2845_Ha.jpg
AR2845_Ha.jpg (130.27 KiB) Viewed 303 times
The final disk image with this setup covers the southern hemisphere of the sun, showing AR2844 in the SW and AR2847/2849 on the SE quadrant:
South_Ha.jpg
South_Ha.jpg (448.19 KiB) Viewed 303 times
There were many small prominances, but two stood out and I grabbed images of them as well:
SW_Prom.jpg
SW_Prom.jpg (44.27 KiB) Viewed 303 times
SE_Prom.jpg
SE_Prom.jpg (52.41 KiB) Viewed 303 times
The seeing was variable and it is evident that some turned out better than others.

Since I had lots of time I also setup the DS mod with the 4x Powermate and the ASI174MM camera. I was expecting greater seeing effects, but I was surprised how they came out. I have the two main AR's on the eastern limb imaged with this setup below:
AR2846-284_Ha.jpg
AR2846-284_Ha.jpg (692.84 KiB) Viewed 303 times
I think the seeing was most co-operative for this image below:
AR2847-2849_Ha.jpg
AR2847-2849_Ha.jpg (514.05 KiB) Viewed 303 times
So I have a questions to members...with images shown in the first (July 18) and second (this post) run using the double stack mod on the Orion OTA, does anyone care to share there thoughts on where the DS system in running based on the images? I'd be happy with it in the 0.5A range...though still some setup work to fine tune. Any thoughts?

Thanks everyone for your attention to this work in progress!

Take care,
Brian
