Ha Double Stacked Sun 26th July
Much to my surprise this morning dawned with clear skies, and given the weather we have forecast for the coming week I thought it prudent to make the most of things.
First job was to check out my new el-cheapo focal reducer for the full disk, which I found didn't offer enough reduction as I would have liked, so a little tweaking with the spacing of the lens in the cell and I managed to get the suns disk nicely on the chip. The use of the reducer also now does away with the Baader solar telecompressor and spacers that were used, and reduces the weight of my double stack setup by a couple of hundred grams, this might not sound much, but the overall weight is at the limit for the mount, and more importantly the weight is being removed from the end of the turning moment, so should just ease things up for the solarquest when i'm on my travels. I actually thing the cheapo reducer gives a better view than the solar compressor ever did. Scope used was a 50mm Lunt etalon on the 60/360 frac, double stacked with a Quark and then the ICX814 chipped camera.

Next up I decided to try out the double stacked Coronado SM90, and using the ZWO 290mm camera along with a Cemax barlow to get me up to around f16. The seeing was really boing and it took a lot of frames distilled back to only a few to get some workable data. The 2 active regions looked great, with all that angry plage and filaments...

Pleased to get these as was expecting to be cloudy today, any more for the rest of the week will be opportunistic between the showers. Hope you like!

Excellent captures Mark.
The exposure/processing has shown very well the action on the disk.

Mark,
I have thought about getting an el-cheapo focal reducer for the 90. What brand did you get?

Thanks everyone for the kind words, this is focal reducer I got https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/383572165450
Visually both scopes are pretty contrasty, certainly all in the images is easy to the eye. The DS90 has a bit less uniformity across the disk, but is absolutely fine for these mid scale closer views... I often spend quite a bit of time taking in a visual with the DS90 as there is so much fine detail to be seen, today was no exception.

I am interested in the reducer you are using since I am intending to make fulldisk animation myself. I posted a question about reducer here. Would you mind take a look? I 'd like the name and brand of the reducer you are using. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=32839

Not sure really, added about 4 or 5mm on top of the reducer to chip distance. Just really till I got a frame with a reasonable amount of space around the sun and edges of chip for any mount drift...

Re: Ha Double Stacked Sun 26th July
Hmm. Interesting. AFAIK, reducer will only provide a illuminated field about half of the reducer's aperture . In this case a 1.25 inches with 22.5mm clear aperture will have 11-12 mm illuminated field at best. You sensor is 16mm in diagonal. Do you experience vignetting with this reducer?marktownley wrote: ↑Fri Jul 30, 2021 2:43 pm Hi Minh, it's a FLIR Grasshopper 3 U3916M

Re: Ha Double Stacked Sun 26th July
I get the full sun in 'one take' as per the images, if I crank the exposure right up you can see the image circle, the very corners of the chip will be vignetted, but that doesn't matter as the sun isn't there...

Re: Ha Double Stacked Sun 26th July
If it helps, the sensor is 3300x2700 (ish) and I run a ROI of 2600x2500 when I image, solar disk is just over 2400 pixels across, not measured it, but is roughly that big...
