July 26 2021 Observations. Lots of Filaments!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 15:00 to 15:45 UTC. The skies are mostly clear but hazy. Seeing is below average :-( The temperature is 82F ( 27.8C ).

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 33x, 44.5x and 64x ( Ha )
Today I can see five areas of activity on the solar disc. AR12846 is now entering the NW quadrant and shows 6 filaments to the NE to SE of it. One of these is really dark and easy. I can see it's attachment " feet ". It looks like a shrimp in shape with it's tail turned under! I also see a small thin filament east of these that is a part of a small hard to see disturbance that lies there. West of AR12846 lies AR12848 with a small filament SE of it. AR12847 is easily seen in the south central area of the disc as a patchy elongated plage. A line of filaments lie SW of AR12847. AR12849 to it's NE is a bit easier to see. It's two filaments from yesterday are still there but have lost some of their form. An easy broken line of filaments lie east and southeast of AR12849 and more northeast of the active region. I also see another filament close to the SE limb.

The best prominence is a bright one on the NW limb. It's the only one I can easily see in double-stack.

The mottles are easily seen and I can glimpse the spicule layer on the limb at 64x.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x and 110x ( WL )
Spots are small and scarce today. I can see 5 spots/pores in AR12846. It's faculae is invisible. I can see a patch of faculae in the NE as well. I can faintly glimpse the faculae to AR12848 in the NW. The faculae to AR12844 is visible in the SW. I see no spots or pores within it. All I see of AR12847 is a single small dark sunspot. I see nothing of AR12849 in WL. SDO shows a couple of small pores there and very faint faculae but I cannot see neither. I do see a low contrast patch of faculae near the SE limb though. That makes a total of 6 areas in WL.

The granulation is weakly visible at session's beginning and not noticed at all at session's end.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Thanks James, glad you got chance to observe, the sun looked really nice today, I spent quite some time visually with both my DS50 and also the DS90. Hoping for some gaps in between tomorrows showers that are forecast so that I can 'grab and go'...

Thank you James for your usual excellent report.

Little chance today in clouds mostly.

Am waiting to get a chance to align the new SkyWatcher Esprit 80ED with the Lunt Ha and CAK scopes, which is now mounted in between the latter two successfully.

If the sky remains clear tonight around mid-night/z the Moon and Saturn will be targeted as the 1st light for the newbie, but it's 50/50 weather-wise.

Cheers for now
Terry
