July 28th - Something Different

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi everyone...

I had a bit of time over lunch yesterday to do some imaging and though the SOHO image of SpaceWeather did not show a lot of activity I was quite surprised at the views through the LS80T solar scope. Some beautiful filaments and active regions as well as a few proms visible to my eye.

I decided to do some testing of the full disk imaging through the double stacked LS80T/LS75FHa combo that has been my goto full-disk scope for many years. I have traditionally imaged with the ASI174MM camera, partially due to simplicity and partially due to artifacts in the ASI1600MM that I couldn't flat out and caused an ugly image. The smaller pixels in the 1600MM are a better fit to the short focal length of the LS80T, and I spent some time recently cleaning the camera and now able to produce a decent image. Examples of the image scale on the cameras is shown below.

The large disk was taken with the ASI1600MM with the equivalent of a 1.6x barlow threaded into the nosepiece. In the upper left is the 1600MM image at prime focus, and the lower left image is the image from the 174MM camera:

After the full disk tests, I setup the Quark Combo with the ASI174MM to image through the Orion 130 EON since I have ignored this filter for some time and figured I better let in have some fresh air and sun ;) I was running short on time, so I only grabbed a few images of the two main AR on the western side of the disk. The first used the 3x focal extender to give f21, which is below the preferred f-ratio for the filter but I wanted to see how it worked on the new OTA. Seeing was very poor and only captures of AR2847/2849 turned out very well:

The seeing seemed to stabilize a bit before i shut down, so I used the 5x Powermate to finish the tests off. This certainly seems to be a better setup at f35:

I nice day of experimenting ;)

Bathed in the light of the Triple Sun! :)

That's a nice experimental run of images, Brian.

Hi Brian

Lovely images
I'm a bit confused though, in your text you say the large disk at 1.6x is with the ASI174, but on the image it says 1.6x is with the ASI1600, am I reading this wrong, I have just been to the dentist so a bit drugged up so could easily be me :?

Cheers Rod

Thanks everyone for the comments and feedback on the images :bow

Rod, you are correct...I miss typed the description and the 1.6x image was with the ASI1600MM. Sorry for the confusion, I have corrected it in the post.

Brian
