Small CME ANIMATION 18 Aug 2021

Post by minhlead »

Seeing was good today (7/10) and it shows on the animation. There is a small prom ejected away and it's the very first time I observed this phenomena. And the decaying prom also look cool.

You can tell the seeing is good as you can see all the individual spicules on the limb rising and falling. Lovely to see the little puff blowing away :bow :hamster: :hamster:

Thanks Terry, still figuring out how to properly colourize my images. Not quite satisfied yet but close.

Thanks Alexandra. Eagle eyed as always. I tried a new processing technique that helps revealing details of spicules on the limb and surface details that got lost because of quantization error and dynamic range clipping. A non-linear tone map is applied to highlights to compress the dynamic range seems to bring out details over the limb area. The result is promising as shown on the animation. Think I'll explore more on this later.

Excellent animation Minh! Movement is wonderfully smooth and the action of the surface features is wonderful as well as that bit of eruptive surge prom that blows away! Great catch!

Very good Minh! Would be interested in more detail of the new processing technique you used.

I applied the HDR multiscale transform process in PixInsight with the transform option set to median and use an inverted mask to target the highlight only.

Great detail, and great animation! I think I like the inverted disc for animations, seems like its easier to see the spicules and their movement vs uninverted. Thanks for posting!

That is true, James. The easiest way to get both the proms and the surface in 1 shots is to invert the images and then play with the curve. Also inverted version always have a more controlled noise on the background after process because of the nature of how it processed. In positive (normal) image, you bring out the proms by lifting the shadow and that will bring out the background noise. In inverted version you bring out the proms by dropping the highlight so the noise is more controlable that way.
