New etalon, AR12858 and Prominences

Post by Hughsie »

I am now double stacking my Lunt 60mm THA/B1200CPT having received the new filter yesterday. A small break in the clouds turned up unexpectedly this afternoon and I set up to see how the ‘new’ view. Would welcome others thoughts on tuning the two etalons.....

I first got the exposure at 80% on this histogram and focussed the scope as a single stacked unit. Next I adjusted the pressure tuner until the histogram was at its lowest level.

Then I attached the second etalon to the front of the scope, refocused and adjusted the tilt until the histogram was at its highest point but not over exposed.

Sadly, I wasn’t helped by cloud cover regularly crossing my view whilst trying to dial everything in, but did manage to capture some images, the one below being the best of a poor bunch captured with the ZWO ASI 174mm and 3x Altair Astro Barlow ......

This is one of the best (if not the best) image with the Filaprom showing-up so very well that I've seen.

You not only have the perfect combination-settings of the two Etalons, to capture the proms and surface detail so well, which can be quite challenging to achieve with the LS-60 BF1200 DS-ing.

I am fairly certain that the large and big prominence that we have been seeing/imaging over the last 4-days or so, is that which has included the Filaprom in your image.

The image frame is also excellent...

Thanks for sharing
Terry

Wonderful depiction of this prom, beautiful! Difficult to tell how well your tuning is unless we see an image that includes prom and surface without inverting one or the other. A well tuned DS will not show a double limb, but based upon your description it sounds like you should have it tuned fairly well. On my LS60T which is a tilt tune, I got the best tuning in SS as you did, and then after attaching the DS unit I only tilted the 2nd etalon enough to barely move the "ghost" image off of the disk.
