August 19 2021 Observations. Dark NE Filament.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 13:58 to 14:52 UTC. The skies are mostly cloudy with high and medium level clouds. The seeing is ok. The temperature is 76F ( 24.4C ).

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 25x and 33x ( Ha )
The most spectacular thing visible on the disc is the big dark filament in the NE. Even at the low magnifications used it shows a dark northern, northwest edge fading to lighter shadings as one looks southeast into the object. There are some fainter prominences bordering it's northeast edges on the limb so it may be still considered a filaprom. I lack the resolution to tell visually. Two prominences lie north of the large filament on the limb.

I also see filaments in the NW including one associated with AR12853, a couple in the SW and a couple in the SE. A SE one may be a filaprom connecting a filament to a bright arced over prominence.

Prominences are few. The NE limb has them as does the SE limb.

I can see two active areas on the disc. The combined areas of AR12857 and AR12853 nearing the NW limb can be easily seen and AR12858 just NW of the disc center can be seen with some difficulty.

The mottles are seen discwide.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 50x, 62.5x and 83x. ( WL )
I can see 4 spots/pores located just NW of the disc's center. These are associated with AR12858. I can see a large scattered patch of faculae in the NW. These are associated with AR12857 and AR12853. The faculae to AR12853 shows two tiny pores that I could only barely pick out at 83x. The SE shows two patches of faculae. The southernmost one contains a single tiny pore as revealed by the SDOHMI continuum image. I could not see it visually. I could see nothing of AR12855 in white light or ha today.

High clouds make the granulation difficult to see.

Carpe Diem!

James

Thanks, James. The impressive prom is now an impressive filament :)

Still cloudy here….seemingly never ending cloud.

Hi

I had a brief play with the 90mm trying out a configuration for the Quark Prom and there seemed to be lots of proms.

Cheers. Andrew.

So true Stuart. An impressive filament it is. Good luck on the weather. Mine has been a bit of a challenge lately here too.

Andrew,
I miss your visual observations. Besides myself you are the main reporter of visual data here.

James

Hi James,

I post on my mod posts now, out of the way.

Also poor weather recently and some time on development projects.

Still trying to get the PST mod working better.

Happy with my Quarks. Soon start imaging.

Cheers. Andrew.

Thanks James, nice to hear that filament is a good observing target, even better if it lifts off and you are lucky enough to have good weather to see it :hamster:

My weather hasn't been exactly good. It's been an art of cloud dodging lately. :(
