August 23 2021 Observations. The big filament has disappeared.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

The session was from 16:04 until 16:37 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy. The seeing is surprisingly a bit above average. The temperature is 82F ( 27.7C ).

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x, 64x and 89x ( Ha )
The first thing I noticed was the bright plage of AR12859 in the NE. It's shape is a rough cross or a bird flying eastward. A filament is easily seen looping across it's northern extremities. Two of it's spots are easily seen with the larger one being at the SW edge of the plage. Another small filament lies immediately to it's south. I noticed no other active regions of any significance on the Ha disc outside of AR12859.

The southern hemisphere shows a wide scattering of filaments. One caught my eye in the south-central region with it having a slight bent form and being fainter in the middle. Sadly, the big filament which would now be in the north-central part of the disc fell back into the sun yesterday and is no more. I had hopes for that one and really enjoyed it both as a prominence and as a filament.

All four " corners " show prominences today. The NE shows 2 with a delicate thin blunt one leaning south. I saw 2 in the NW. The first being a fairly tall prom with a wispy top that trails south. The base looks like it has supports! The second was very short lived, 10 minutes, maybe less and near the wispy prom. It appeared as a tiny detached bright dot that went as quick as it appeared. The SW showed thee proms. The southernmost one had a " hole " in it's south side. I saw only one small pyramid prom on the SE limb.

The limb spicule layer was visible without difficulty.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x and 110x ( WL )
I could see every spot and pore in AR12859 shown on the SDO HMI continuum 4K image. 11 in total. I could see detail in the spots themselves with the penumbrae showing quite a bit of mottled radiating detail. The northernmost spot has it's penumbra fanning out to the north of the umbra. Faculae to the system can be seen trailing back almost to the limb. The SE shows another patch of faculae near the limb. I can also see the faculae to AR12858 in the NW.

The granulation looks really nice. Though tiny I can see the individuals with a close look and can see differences in some being brighter-darker than others.

The music for today's session was Painting the Sun by pianist David Lanz.

Have a good week, everyone!

James

Two distinct spot areas now which if their polarity continues to differ, could well send us a direct CME !!
C-Class flares have shown how active 2859 has been, so maybe...

The S.E. AR seems a "damp squid" as far as any real action is concerned, but further AR's are approaching the N.E.Limb over the next two days +

Hoping that tomorrow (Tuesday) our skies here will remain clear enough as forecasted for the first Sodium captures and in any case I just need to get used to using it at least and whilst the whole Quad Solar-Scope Assembly is ready and waiting for it's first light...

Thanks James

Terry

Hi James.

Looks like you had a successful session. There are many filaments today. Have you noticed a rather large, but low-contrast filament at the edge of the disc for about 1 hour? I barely saw him on the screen, and in the final photo he is also barely distinguishable, but in the pictures of Pedro through the double stack he is not badly visible.

Terry,
I eagerly await your sodium d line images. Try observing visually with it also. I am curious of the results.

Ivan,
I don't remember a low contrast filament at the edge of the disc. I didn't take note of it anyway. Do you remember where is was at the limb? I'll have to check out Pedro's images again.

Good morning James.
An early start today as the sky is and should remain clear for the day here at least.

So I certainly hope that the first-light Sodium views and imaging are successful and of course will post the results for you.

Of course the first will be visual for both focusing and tuning the various settings and assuming all okay, will go for the new camera as the ZWO ASI-120 MC-S for both mono and colour using SharpCap. Will likely process those first before also taking Ha and CaK with the Lunts.

If time allows (which it should) will also go for the fourth line as WL.

Hopefully, as the surface-wind is calm before around 10:00z, there should not be any turbulence (except me getting excited about the newbie), then the results could/should be promising.

Speak to you later.
Cheers
Terry

Thanks James, what a perfect description, I wish I had your skills :hamster: I was disappointed the big filament was not there as I never got to see it at all. I did enjoy the active region shape though :) back to grey and miserable here again today.

This gorgeous FD photographed Pedro on August 23rd, I marked the area I wrote about. I hope he doesn't mind.

Ivan,
Somehow I overlooked that filament. :(

Maurits,
And your image turned out well.
