August 27 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 15:08 to 16:17 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy with below average seeing. The temperature is 79F ( 26.1C ) All of GONG's instruments have been out for awhile, 8 hours+ so the sun had changed a bit from them to my current observations.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 64x ( Ha )
I can see seven plages/disturbed regions in Ha today! AR12859 nearing the CLM in the north shows a plage with an uneven parenthesis shape with a detached part to the NW with the spot between them. I see a long thin bent filament NE of AR12859. I also see a moderately dark filament NW of AR12859. AR12860 shows a long thin sickle shaped filament in it's southern reaches. It reaches SW towards a larger darker filament but does not quite contact it. The plage of AR12860 is very easily seen with three spots being seen within it. Both AR12859 and AR12860 show a considerable disturbance in the spicule field ( mottles ) around them with them twisting and radiating outwards from the spots due to their immense magnetic fields. To the east of AR12859 I see a slight disturbance and eastward still the double plage of AR12861. East of AR12860 is a tiny but not too difficult double plage and another bright one is seen near the SW limb. The most difficult is a mere ruffling of the chromosphere near the NW limb.

The southern hemisphere is strewn with easy filaments!

I see 5 proms on the SW limb. Three of these are flat-topped like thunderheads! I see a fairly tall wispy prom on the SE limb. A second small prominence is seen nearby. I see two more proms on the NW limb. I thought the northernmost faint one may be a close double prom but the just updated GONG image shows this isn't so.

I can barely see the limb spicule layer and the mottles are easy across the disc today.

GONG updated the EL Teide Ha image just after I came in from observing.

Celestron 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x ( WL )
I can see six regions in white light, seven if you count the faculae above AR12861 as a separate object. AR12859 shows three spots/pores to my eye. SDOHMIc shows 5. The largest one in the west of the group shows a penumbra. AR12860 in the SE has became a complex group. It's northern section shows a stringing of spots running NE-SW with the biggest spot on the SW end. The southern section shows two spots N-S with three smaller spots close by. Three spots in the group sport penumbrae. I can count roughly 18 in the group but the poor seeing makes it difficult. I can see no detail with certainty within the spots penumbrae. I can see one dark pore in AR12861 in the NE. It's faculae can be seen as can another NE of it. I see no pores in the second patch of faculae. Just south of the equator in the east I see another patch of faculae near the limb. I see a bright oval patch of faculae near the SW limb. I can see three pores in it. SDOHMIc shows 6. I see some fainter scattered faculae near the NW limb.

The granulation is almost invisible today.

Happy Friday folks!!

James

Hi James,

Thanks for the very detailed description. It seemed to me that there were fewer threads. I also noticed that gong was not updated this morning local time.

Ivan,
Yes, GONG was only of limited help to me this morning but as usual my observations went on. The GONG network not only shows me what is present on the sun at a given time but helps me determine the solar orientation. I use Tilting Sun as well for that. When GONG is out of date by 8 hours things change. Noticeably!

Have a good weekend.

James
