Session time is from 15:50 to 17:00 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy. The seeing is below average. The temperature is 82F ( 27.7C )
Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x, 64x and 89x ( Ha )
I could see 6 plage disturbance areas on the Ha disc today. 7 if a double one is counted as individuals. AR12859 now just past the CLM has a somewhat question mark shaped plage. East of it lies a somewhat hard to see disturbance but for a easy thin filament that lies over it. Eastward still lies a double plage. But is the southernmost of these AR12861 or both of them? The south-central area of the disc is where AR12861 lies. I can see a couple of thin filaments within it and it's spot. I can see a single small plage in the SE quadrant. I can hint a ruffled area in the far SW near a magnificent prominence on the limb. GONG shows the chromosphere to be quite disturbed in the far SW but I cannot see most of it. Filaments abound here. A thin dark double one, a couple near the SW limb and one dark one SW of AR12861. Two nice dark filament lie in the NW quadrant too!
Today is a nice day for prominences! A magnificent one is seen on the SW limb. I counted 11 voids in the northern part of it but in a very short amount of time they opened up almost into a single large tattered opening within the plasma. Just south was another section of prom that faced south looking like a bird with a heavy beak. South still was some streamers that coalesced into three individual clouds of plasma. This prom complex changed a lot in the short hour+ that I observed it! The SE had some nice prominences as well. Shaggy flat topped fiery bushes and a streak. 5 of them in all. I noticed one in the NE. I did do a single Ha image using the iPhone today that concentrated on the solar limb.
I could see the spicule layer on the limb and could with a close look see some of the macro-spicules rising above the rest. The mottles where easy on the disc too.
Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x ( WL )
I can see 5 areas on the WL disc today. AR12859 is visible as a single spot and one lone pore. East of AR12859 near the limb I see only a weak patch of faculae. SDOHMIc shows a single pore just south of a line drawn between it and AR12859. I never could see that pore visually! I never could find it. South of AR12859 lies the magnificent spot group of AR12860. It's got so many spots and pores fused together in close proximity I didn't try to count them. Many of these were surrounded by shared penumbrae. A tail of spots hangs down in the SE from the many body of spots. SDO also shows three large pores well to the NE of AR12860. I didn't notice them at all! Was I distracted by the larger group nearby? I can see faculae associated with AR12862 in the SW. This one contains by the SDOHMIc images, 4 tiny pores that I didn't see.
I could see the granulation a bit better than I could yesterday.
Carpe Noctem! It's been a busy day and I have posted really late, or really early! Goodnight or good morning everyone.
James

Thank you for your early of the two reports James
Excellent capture of the "Ring of Fire" albeit not enough fire. Very siilar to my offering of the same.
Cheers

Very detailed and very interesting report, James. Thanks for sharing. Yesterday and today I was looking for your description, and I thought that you had things to do or the weather did not allow, but now I see that everything is fine, you did it!
