August 29 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 15:50 to 16:50 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy with rough seeing. The temperature is 84F ( 28.8C )

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 64x ( Ha )
I can see 5 disturbed areas on the Ha solar disc today. AR12860 in the SW is the easiest to see. It's plage lies offset to the spot groups orientation and many of the spots are visible in Ha. I see a single thin filament just SE of it's plage and a vague filament SW of it. The Chromosphere in the vicinity of the large group is certainly disturbed and that is easily seen. I can see another small plage well NE of AR12860. AR12859 in the NW quadrant seems to be waning down in activity but is still easily visible as a plage and single spot in it's SW extremities. AR12861 appears as a double plage. Not very obvious. Between AR12859 and AR12861 lies a mere disturbance with a single filament visible with a close look.

Filaments seem fewer today than what they have been. Two in the SW, one on the SE and two in the NW, one of these at the NW limb.

I see some nice prominences on the SW limb. A wide bushy one is the northernmost of these. Then a low straight one. The southern one is two spanned by a plasma bridge! The SE one has a prom that looks like a creeping worm! I see a couple of small proms in the NW.

I can with difficulty see the limb spicule layer and the mottles are visible across the solar disc.

Celestron NexStar 102 GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x ( WL )
I can see 5 areas of disturbance on the photosphere today. AR12860 is by far the most impressive. I see the spots arranged in three patches with each patch being enclosed in penumbrae. I see three small spots SE of the main group. I see no faculae to the group. I see a single spot with a pore to the NW in AR12859. No other details are seen. I see a patch of scattered faculae at the NW limb and another patch associated with the departing AR12862 at the SW limb. A new patch of faculae is seen just inside of the NE limb. I see no spots or pores associated with it.

Despite the seeing I can see the fine granulation today.

Carpe Lumen!

James

An excellent and accurate report of todays' offerings James.

My Ha imagery failed to show significant porridge, but the seeing was not good in between large amounts of clouds.

Thanks
Terry

It seems to me that with the exception of AR's, the Sun has become less interesting, the filaments have become much smaller. But your description, as always, is very detailed and interesting. Thanks.

Terry,
The thought of porridge, known more here as oatmeal or grits, makes me hungry. :)

Ivan,
I agree, with the exception of AR12860 the Sun is calming down. They are fewer filaments today and AR12859 is weakening. There's a bit less prominence activity on the limb than yesterday too. And thanks. You are welcome.

Brian,
I enjoyed your images, as always.

Thanks Stu!!

James
