September 2 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 15.42 to 16:32 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy. The seeing is fair or just below. The temperature is 73F ( 22.7C ).

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x, 25x and 33x. ( Ha )
I can see 6 active regions/disturbances on the Ha solar disc today. AR12860 is very near the SW limb with a nice bright southward curving prominence on the limb near it. The NW shows a much fainter plage near some filaments with a larger filament further to it's east ( AR12859 ). Eastward but still in the NW quad I can see a disturbance in the chromosphere SW of a row of three small filaments ( AR12861 ). The NE quadrant shows two easy plage disturbances. The easternmost one is brighter with the westernmost one tailing behind it to the SW. A fairly dark filament lies near the NE limb. The brightest plage on the disc is in the SE quadrant. I did not notice this visually but in the GONG Cerro Tololo image the plage has a swastika shape! A spot lies at it's western extremities. I search out and see two small filaments near the SSW limb.

I see a nice prominence on the NW limb and it truly resembles a burning flame! The SW limb shows two bright ones with the northernmost one being associated with AR12860. I can also see a small fairly bright one on the SE limb.

The mottles are easily seen across the disc.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see 4 areas of disturbance on the white light disc today. AR12860 lies very near the SW limb and I can see it's major spots from a highly inclined angle. It's faculae are bright and detailed. I can see the faculae to AR12859 near the NW limb. I see no spots or pores within it. I see a patch of faculae in the NE but see no spots or pores associated with it. The SE shows a new developing spot group! It's largest spot in it's NW extremities shows a penumbra surrounding it's darker umbra. I cannot see any faculae to the system, it's too far from the limb for it to easily stand out.

The fine granulation is visible but not obvious.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Hi James,
Good description, sorry the AR12860 is going away. It's amazing how you manage to see the connection between this AR and the prom next door. I could only notice this connection in the photo.

Ivan

Thank you James for another excellent report.

AR2863 is the newbie with spots in the S.E.

Cheers
Terry

Ivan,
The surge prom sat practically on top of AR12860. I more or less gave an educated guess that it was involved with that region. Your photos can certainly out resolve my eye behind the low magnifications used on my SMII60.

Terry,
You always get the AR numbers before I do. ;-)

James
