Sun FD in H-Alpha and CaK 29th of August 2021

Post by arnedanielsen »

Dear friends,

Over the Summer I have mostly been imaging from my backyard observatory. This allows me to keep everything setup and ready to imaging in just a few minutes. Unfortunately my old trusty Pier-Tech 2 Pier died on me the other day and combined with the Sun starting to get very low on the sky this limits my imaging-window from the observatory to just a couple of hours. This imaging window is shrinking rapidly and I will have to move back to using my portable setup.

Anyway, here are a couple of FD images from the observatory (probably the last for this season) and a couple with the portable setup.

FD image in H-Alpha using a Takahashi Sky-90II with Coronado 90mm/BF15 w/Beloptik ITF, Coronado 2x CeMax and ASI 1600mm PRO everything mounted on a Paramount ME.

Can't the Pier-Tech be repaired? It seems like a hideously expensive item to have a break down.
I know nothing about the mechanism. Nor what might be the problem.
The hive mind of the forum system might be able to suggest a way forwards.

These are stunning images Arne, you have had a really good run this summer getting much more sunshine than the UK :bow :hamster: but sorry to hear about the mount, at least you have the whole of the winter to try and fix it, I hope it can be repaired?

Thank you very much for all your kind comments.

The warranty period is long gone for the pier (I’ve had it for 15 years) and trying to fix it means removing everything mounted on it. I will then lose my polar-alignment, T-Point model etc. I don’t think I will bother to mess around with that now and instead live with as it is. For deep sky imaging I’m mainly using it in the position it is now to protect the scope as much as possible from local light pollution and wind. The only times I raise the pier is for solar imaging and when there is something interesting (like a comet) low on the horizon.

Alexandra: Luckily it’s just the pier. The weather have been unusually good here in the Southern parts of Norway this Summer and combined with home-office (due to Covid) and staying home for the vacation have allowed me to do lot of Solar imaging.
Best regards,
Arne
