September 4 2021. Spots, Plages and Proms, Oh My!!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:30 to 15:40 UTC. The skies are mostly clear. The seeing is decent. The temperature is 74F ( 23.3C )

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 25x and 33x. ( Ha )
I can see six plages/active regions on the Ha disc today!! AR12864 is an elongated plage, roughly E-W with a spot in the middle. To it's east is the now numbered AR12865 is a N-S oriented plage with a fine filament running N-S in the middle of it. AR12863 is visible in the south just to the east of the Central Longitudinal Meridian and shows an easy spot to the NW of it's plage. I can see two more plages in the SE quadrant. AR12866 is just west of the eastern limb with another AR plage just SW of it. I can see the plage of AR12867 nearing the SW limb.

I notice no filaments in the southern hemisphere though GONG Cerro Tololo shows one near the SW limb. I do see several filaments in the NE quadrant with two being quite easy to see. The NW also has a few small ones.

The prominences are nice today. The NE has 4 really nice ones! The northernmost of these raises up to the north as does a branch of a prom south of it. The third down looks like a fizzler  and the southernmost one is the brightest of all of them. I really needed the SMII90 to see more detail in them. The SMII60 will show their basic form but not much more. I can see a fainter prom on the SE limb and three bright proms on the SW limb. The larger middle one of these shows a couple of northward pointing extensions. The NW shows a few close to the limb.

The mottles are easily seen across the disc today

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see seven active region disturbances in WL!! I was able to count 10 spots belonging to AR12864. The largest one is at the western end of the group. I can count three in AR12865 to the east of AR12864. To the east of these near the NE limb lies a patch of faculae. I see no spots or pores within it. Down south nearing the CLM I see 5 spots associated with AR12863. The largest of these sports a penumbra! Three of the pores form a line. I can barely resolve them. The far SE shows two active regions. AR12866 is the nearest to the limb. I can resolve 4 spots/pores within it. The easternmost one is the largest and easiest to see. Another AR lies to it's SW. I can see two small spots in it. Both ARs are embedded in bright faculae. AR12867 is located near the SW limb. I can see a spot and a pore within it. The easier to see spot is in the western part of the small but easy patch of faculae.

The fine granulation is fairly easy to see today.

Carpe Noctem!

James

Heya James, thanks for the great report! Looks like the sun is busy again. Back from our travels now and back at home - nearly 3 weeks of travelling around with my solar gear and it has been cloudy, however, dare I say it this morning is sunny, so hopefully going to get outside very soon and see what i've been missing.

Hi James: great report. Yesterday was definitely a proms day, even with a number of sunspot groups in sight.

Mark, I gotta say, I enjoy your boat images about as much as I do your solar ones. :-)

What boat images James ???

Anyhow thanks for your excellent report of today's rare-happenings and for your own captures (wherever they are) ???

Mine in superbly-rare clear skies will follow in due course, including hopefully some better Sodium too...

Cheers
Terry

What boat images James ???_Terry

I haven't seen none from this outing but he's posted some beautiful ones in the past. I so wish the US had canal systems like England so I could at least rent a longboat! Or I could go there!!

In fact James, I've been weather watching for the SW of England, whilst Mark has been trawling canals in that area and his weather (like most of us in England) has not been kind for observing or imaging, but I guess Mark will enlighten us more with his story...

Cheers and about to post my collection of todays captures..

Terry,
I looked at yours. You have became our main poster of Sodium images. Franco does them too sometimes. Have you used the sodium quark visually any? If so, how did it do?
