September 5 2021 Observations. Busy Sol!!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:30 until 16:14 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy. The seeing is below average. The temperature is 64F ( 17.7C ).

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x, 25x, 33x and 50x ( Ha )
I got eight regions in Ha today! AR12864 is on the CLM with AR12865 lying just east of it. I can see a couple of spots within the plage of AR12864. GONG Cerro Tololo shows some fime filaments within both AR128654 and AR12865. I cannot pick them out visually. I did notice a disturbance immediately west of AR12864. I actually find it more noticeable visually than it appears on the GONG image. I can also see a disturbance in the NE near the limb in the vicinity of a couple of dark filaments. Just across the CLM in the southern hemisphere is AR12863. It's spot is easily visible NW of it's plage. Well east of it lies AR12868. Just NE of AR12868 lies AR 12866. Both are really easy to see. In fact AR12864, AR12865, AR12863, AR12866 and AR12868 are all easily seen. A small pale plage is seen in the far SE below AR12866 and AR12868.

As far as filaments go I see dark ones NE of AR 12864-65 and two smaller filaments between AR12865 and a disturbance near the NE limb. That disturbance itself has two dark filaments associated with it. I see no filaments at all in the southern hemisphere.

Prominences abound today. The NE shows one bending north with a base that reminds me of the Eiffel Tower. It's pretty big. I needed the SMII90 in single stack for a better view of this one. The SE shows a bright one with a dark gap at the base. Between these lie a faint scattering of proms that are hard to see in DS. Both the SW and NW show small but bright prominences.

The mottles are easily seen across the disc.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see seven regions in white light today. I can see 7 spots/pores in AR12864 in the north. Two of these spots are sizeable and have penumbrae. Their umbrae are not symmetrical. I see 1 spot and 1 pore in AR12863 on the SC part of the disc.. The spot is nearly perfectly round at the edge of the penumbra. The pore lies to it's SE. AR12868 in the SE shows 7 spots/pores to my eye. Three of these sport a penumbra. Just NE of these lies the spot group of AR12866. I can see 9 spots and pores in this one! I can see three with penumbrae. Both AR12868 and AR12866 have visible faculae though the facula of AR12866 is a bit easier to see since it is a bit nearer to the limb. I can also pick up a small facula near the limb south of AR12866 and AR12868. I can also see a scattered patch of faculae in the NW marking a disturbance there shown in Ha. I also see another patch of faculae in the NW near the limb. Neither have any visible pores or spots.

The fine granulation is visible but it's soft and weak.

Between both Ha and WL I got nine disturbances in all!

Carpe Lumen!

James

Sorry Ivan. Use GONG and SDO to view the Sun and then there is us here on Solarchat with our images and observations. Hail is not good. It sounds like you are having thunderstorms. I hope it clears out soon for you.

Saw your ‘Eiffel Tower’ prom today with my new LS60MT scope. My wife called it a giraffe prom. Also saw the iconic prom SE. We watched it evolve during the day. Very cool.

But in my view it was flipped L to Right. I only have a Single Stack right now, the DS is being made, and the prom view looked better to me than the photo. From what you wrote, it sounds like SS show proms better than DS? Is that so?

Fed,
Yes the scope flips the image horizontally compared to the GONG and SDO images. Single Stack does better on proms. It's brighter and reveals fainter details that the dimmer double stack image can miss and really faint proms may not be visible at all in double stack. Also I can use higher magnifications on single stack due to the brighter image. But double stack easily outperforms single stack on disc details. Even though the disc is a bit dimmer the contrast is boosted by the second filter. Filaments and active regions are certainly easier to see using a double stacked scope. Getting a stacking etalon is a good investment. It gives you added capability and you can always remove it to brighten the image to see fainter detail in prominences. Just be careful during removal. They don't react kindly to being dropped!

So which image is used when talking about E vs W, or N vs S for that matter? Are both images inverted vertically?

Thanks for the SS vs DS info. Very useful. My DS should arrive in a month or so. I am now glad I am getting a front screw on type…

Fed,
In a telescope the image is flipped right-left, W-E. Vertically it should be correct. The GONG and SDO images are correct.

Sorry to ask again, but I am confused. If the GONG image is correct orientation, why is the Eiffel Tower prom described as being NE?

"Prominences abound today. The NE shows one bending north with a base that reminds me of the Eiffel Tower."

I don’t mean to be annoying, I just want to get this right…

Hi John, the disk appears to be correctly oriented against the standard of SDO captures for North Up and East=Left etc., so it is feasible that the image is a combined-image of proms and surface detail.. I have checked the SDO images for the 5th at 13:38z and the prom in question certainly does appear at the S.E. Limb.

So as James says, telescopes & diagonals etc., can cause confusion, so always best to check against SDO in my case and I know James uses GONG as well..

John,
The GONG and SDO images are image correct. East to the left, west to the right, north at top and south at bottom. Top left is north-east. The scope will show this in reverse with the prom on the right and then the Sun often tilts this in respect to the Earth. Tilting Sun can help you see exactly how the Sun is oriented in your scope.

3times3.gif

The 'TiltingSun2' views at left show the sun at three times on March 15, 2006 at Toronto as it would be oriented in a PST H-Alpha 'scope. A PST inverts the view. A Solarmax40/60/90 has an erect view but left and right are flipped. Unlike the Moon, the Sun has no permanent markings and without a guide it is not easy to know its orientation.

I still get turned around myself. It can be very confusing. It's hard to even explain. I'll confuse myself if I am not careful.
I have checked the SDO images for the 5th at 13:38z and the prom in question certainly does appear at the S.E. Limb._Terry
SE limb? GONG shows it oriented to the NE as does the SDO. I am talking about the Eiffel/Donkey prom. Does it appear in the SE in your scope? Flipped horizontally and tilted?

I am referring to what was called the "Eiffel Tower" prom, which is nothing like the one in the N.E. at the time of that GONG image so perhaps that one shown in the Gong image in the S.E. is far more like the metal-structure in Paris.
I went up there a few years back and took loads of photos, but time preludes me from showing them here...

Cheers

I agree James about the names and maybe one day you might get to Paris.
I have been a few times for the Paris Air Shows and flown-in too on several occasions and even seen the first display of the Concorde - way back when...

I've done my bit tonight, so off to bi-bi's

Have a good night

Terry,
I have seen the Concorde once. It came in to Asheville Airport back in 86' and got snowed in. It overflew the area before leaving out back to England. It was a beautiful sight to see. And loud at that!

Goodnight.

I get it now, thanks. ‘Solar west.’ Boy, that seems obvious now. Oops.

I saw the Eiffel prom up and to the right, so I think it is the same orientation as your Coronado.

I’m on OSX, so the Tilting Sun doesn’t work for me, but the descriptions and your images do. Wow, that’s confusing. I’ll just be letting that go for now.

Thanks again!

Fed,
If it wasn't for GONG and SDO and Tilting Sun I would stay lost. I still sometimes get turned around. Your Lunt sounds the same as my Coronado. I would have guessed so.

You are welcome.

OMG, I am confused again. In the image you made for me, the sun is shown as it would appear in the viewfinder of my telescope, correct? But isn't solar west on the right (ie rotating towards us)?

The Sun rotates from east to west. Prograde not retrograde. Your viewfinder may be oriented different than your main scope is.
