Great places for Solar Imaging?

Post by pdmphoton »

Hello Solar Imaging Fans,

I am retiring soon and pretty wide open to relocating anywhere in the continental U.S.

Please weigh in as to towns, regions, etc. that you believe would be ideal for solar imaging.

My concept is to purchase some land and put up a small manufactured home and observatory. Somewhat off the grid is doable, just not hours away from supplies.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and opinions.
And yes, I have an SSM to check out seeing conditions.

The gulf coast ( within 200 miles) can have excellent seeing both night and day. I have pretty regular < arc” seeing in the mornings near Austin.
I’ve found high altitude Colorado can have very good day time seeing for solar.

New Mexico! It's generally high altitude and the nighttime skies are gorgeous!

Big Bear California! The pros have a solar observatory there at Big Bear Lake.

I was also going to say around Big bear too.

Where are the major astronomical telescopes sited in the USA? they are there for a reason :) so use their knowledge :) I wish I had this option.
