September 12 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:00 to 16:04 UTC. The skies are clear but hazy. The seeing is fair. The temperature is 78F. From Rock Hill S.C.

Coronado SolarMax 60 DS. 16x and 25x. ( Ha )
I can see six active region plages on the Ha solar disc today. AR12868 and AR12866 are easy to see in the SW quadrant. I can also easily see AR12869 SSE of AR12866. AR12865 can be seen as a mere disturbance at the NW limb. I can see a filament in close proximity to it. I can also see another disturbance well east of AR12865 near a filament. Another faint plage is seen in the SE.

A number of filaments can be seen. I see a nice arc of them just NE of AR12865. I see 6 in all. I can see another filament well east of AR12865 near another disturbance located there. A large diffuse filament can be seen in the north below the pole. I can see another filament in the far NE quadrant. I can see only two filaments in the southern hemisphere. One in the SW and one in the far south above the pole.

The big prominence of yesterday is gone. :-( however there is a bright low hedgerow prom on the SE limb. At one point it looked almost bridgelike. I also see a small bright spray prom at the location of the receding AR12864 on the NW limb. I also notice another prom on the NE limb.

The mottles are easily seen today.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x. ( WL )
I can see five regions on the white light photosphere. AR12868 and AR12866 are still spot bearing regions but they are slowly decaying. I can see three penumbra bearing spots and two pores in AR12868 and 6 spots in AR12866. The largest spot in AR12866 has a small umbra surrounded by a penumbra. The faculae around AR12868 and AR12866 are visible. AR12869 SSE of AR12866 is visible as a facular patch containing a single pore. I can also see a small bright faculae near the NE limb but I see no spots or pores associated with it. I also see faculae near the NW limb associated with AR12865. I see no spots or pores within it.

I see the fine solar granulation without difficulty.

Carpe Lumen!

James.

Nice report James. Rain overnight here last night, grey and work today - hey ho!

In other news my 100/800 APM scope will be shipping this month - woohoo!

Thanks James for the latest and that big prom did produce a CME eventually.

Day-off yesterday (Sunday) as the weather was all cloudy and cooler, so instead I completely assembled the new mini-observatory on my own (without getting Sun-burnt).
Next stage is to fit-in various items including power and modify it to astro purposes, so at least have more work to do now...

Cheers
Terry

Mark,
Nice 👍🏻 on the new refractor. I hope you get some clear skies to use it when it comes. New scopes always seem to draw clouds and you have too many to begin with.

Good luck. 🍀

Terry,
Yesterday’s GONG image shows a small disturbance in the vicinity of the chromosphere where the prom was pulled back into the disc. It may gave ejected a CME. I could not see that disturbance yesterday visually. I will observe shortly here in Rock Hill before leaving for work and then home. I won’t have time to post today’s results until after work tonight.

Sunny Skies!

James

Yes James, that might be the CME from the former "Jumping Cat" prom as being reported elsewhere, but as i have been busy with the new-build during Sunday and Monday, have not followed it myself, so just relying on other sources of info. If confirmed, I doubt whether much of it will affect Earth.

No clear skies today and rain expected over the next 24-hours of so...

Thanks
Terry
