Sun FD in H-Alpha and CaK 12th of September 2021 - big detached prom
Dear friends,
I missed the big prom on Saturday because of rain and clouds. It didn't look to good on Sunday either, but monitoring the satellite images gave me hope that there might be some short moments of clear skies in the afternoon. I setup my gear under roof (to protect it from the rain) and peaked out. Sure enough, there was some short moments of clear patches just long enough to get the Sun centered, focused and take a few shots.
To my big surprise the big prom was still there - although quite faint, but now it was completely detached.
I did a variation of short and long exposures to capture the disc and the prom. Everything was shot using using a Coronado 60mm/BF15 w/Beloptik ITF, stopped down to 50mm, Baader 35nm H-Alpha and ASI 178mm mounted on a SkyWatcher SolarQuest.
Regular exposure for the disc and brighter proms. Sun FD in H-Alpha 12th of September 2021
Sun FD in H-Alpha 12th of September 2021 - colorized
Longer exposure to bring out the detached prom a bit better. Sun FD in H-Alpha 12th of September 2021 - big detached prom
Sun FD in H-Alpha 12th of September 2021 - big detached prom - inverted
Sun FD in H-Alpha 12th of September 2021 - big detached prom - colorized
Combining the two shots above Sun FD in H-Alpha 12th of September 2021 - disc and big detached prom
Sun FD in H-Alpha 12th of September 2021 - disc and big detached prom - colorized

These are really nice Arne and document the separation of that large prom from the disc. Go online and check out the last 48 hours in SDO AIA 304 animations and you can see the prom appear, rise up and separate from the disc only to see it get quickly pulled back into the disc. It’s amazing how fast that plasma can move when you realize how big these things are! Absolutely amazing!!!
Thanks
James

Wow, brilliant & I love how the detached prom looks in black, I can really pick out the detail.

Hi Arne, as James have mentioned, this was an interesting prominence due to it variations and they way it was moving and your images show that you almost definitely caught the point of it actually producing the CME. (I didn't think that CME would occur, but it certainly did)..
Thanks for sharing your excellent captures.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments!
James: I checked the animations... very interesting stuff. I was able to follow the prom on and off through small holes in the clouds for about an hour. During that period the prom faded and vanished.
Best regard,
Arne
