September 15 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 15:00 to 15:32 UTC. The skies are overcast with varying thicknesses of high to medium clouds. The seeing is hard to determine. The temperature is 77F ( 25C ).

I observed white light first when the clouds were just a little thinner. When I went to Ha I found the image too dim to use the stacking etalon due to the clouds so I removed it to brighten the image a bit. That was marginally successful.

Orion 70mm Solar telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I could make out 4 areas of activity on the photosphere today. I could see AR12866 in the SW without too much difficulty. I could barely make out a single spot in it, practically touching the limb surrounded by faculae. The faculae of AR12869 could be seen to the south of AR12866, it too being about to cross over the SW limb. I could also see a faint patch of faculae in the NW and another faint patch in the SE.

I could not see the granulation at all today.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 SS. 16x and 21.5x ( Ha )
I can see only two active regions in the chromosphere today and these took a close look. AR12866 and AR12869 in the SW at the limb. No detail could be seen within their plages. I can see no filaments at all on the disc. I can only softly pick up the mottles on the disc.

Prominences fared better. I see a nice hedgerow group of them on the NW limb. I can see them much as the attached GONG Cerro Tololo image shows them though the finest detail is lacking. They are still quite pretty though. I could still see the dark gap under the bottom most of these as well as voids in a couple of the others despite the clouds. I can also see a tiny bright prom being kicked up by the departing AR12866 in the SW. I can also see a prom on the SE limb and another on the NE limb.

By local noon ( 16:00 UT ) the clouds had completely obscured the sun. The forecast here for tomorrow and Friday looks like clouds and showers.

The music today was " Porcelain " by Helen Jane Long.

Carpe Diem!

James

Thank you James and I guess the proms "Have it", judging by your report and the fab images showing those today.

Cheers
Terry

Mark, You have clear sunny skies seldomly and then when you do it hits you at work. Bummer.

Good luck next time.

Alexandra,
Yeah it's calm. Good timing for me, it looks like a no-go cloudy day again for me. So for me it's GONG, SDO and all you imagers/observers on SolarChat. That's not a bad thing!

Good luck on your solar endeavors today.

James
