MiniSHG and CaK Solar 16th Sept 2021

Post by Merlin66 »

The MiniSHG is giving some good results.
The current data is from 9 sec scans (in Declination) and processed in EN_INTI software (about 3 sec per image!!!!)
The first image is a typical scan result - no additional processing.

The scan also provides a Prominence image - neat!!

This is a stack (AS3!) of four 9sec scan images

I think the results are very good and would certainly be improved with a larger stack.

The current CaK status is pretty quiet. The AR is just leaving the building!

(I will do some comparison images between the MiniSHG and the CaK DIY filter. I have a feeling that the MiniSHG might win!!)

You can also select different wavelengths by a pixel offset.
This shows the results in the red wing at +0.4A

it's unusual to see Ca II K so quiet.

Yeah, very quiet. I haven't seen it like this for a while.

Alexandra,
The MiniSHG uses two 120mm FL lenses from Surplus Shed, a 2400 l/mm grating, a 20 micron slit gap (Ex my Spectra-L200) and the ASI 178 camera.
The MiniSHG fits the hand and weighs just over 1Kg.

Terry,
Thanks mate.
It looks even better at full resolution.

James,
This is certainly the way forward for SHG.
The advent of high speed, small pixel Cmos cameras, combined with very narrow slit gaps (10 micron) has definitely changed our ideas.
As I said in the Preface to my book "Imaging Sunlight" in 2016:
""....it's just a matter of time before the software matures to further refine the images and show the full potential, at any chosen wavelength, of the digital SHG""

9 sec scans and 3 sec processing to a detailed image :o :o :o
It's time has come!!!!

Alexandra,
I don't think for one moment you're "dumb"!!!

Yes, I'm pretty sure the MiniSHG (or similar) will be commercialised in the near future.
It's compact design is pretty robust and flexible enough to be used on most refractors.
Operation is very simple focus the spectrum, focus on the solar edge and then the final tweak to fine focus on the "wiggles" inside the absorption line. Majic!!!

Bang per wavelength buck this is definitely the way to go.
Where else would you find a 0.2A resolution filter for CaK H alpha and every wavelengths between for less than $700 ??????
