September 18 2021 Observations. Proms on the SE limb.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 14:45 to 15:30 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy. The seeing is fair. The temperature is 73F ( 22.7C )

I was expecting totally overcast skies today but surprisingly the clouds parted enough for me to get a quick session in.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
The most noticeable objects on the Ha disc today are the prominences on the SE limb. I can see 5 of them. Two larger ones to the north and south with low bright disc hugging proms between them. To the south of these I see another prom. The north and south proms lean away from the activity and smaller brighter proms between them.

I see three filaments in the SE and two darker ones in the NE. I see a single filament in the NW near the limb.

I can see three plage disturbances today. One is a difficult pale plage located at the CLM southwest of the two dark filaments in the NE. The second is easier and is located NW of of the southwesternmost of two filaments in the SE. The third is visible with certainty near a thin filament west of these. The GONG CT image shows two more, one in the NW and another in the SW that I never could find. There is certainly NOT a major active region on the disc but that may be about to change!

The mottles are seen without difficulty.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see a spot at the SE limb!! No sign of faculae there though which I find surprising. Some can be seen in the SDO image however. Other than that I can see a patch of faculae in the NE and another in the SW. The fine solar granulation is visible.

Off to my dad's place in Lowndesville SC I go.

Have a nice weekend.

James

Thanks for the report James. Yesterday had its brief clear moments for me - not really enough to image, but enough for some visual. Despite the sun being devoid of spots using the Coronado DS90 which i'd just left set up, I enjoyed nice views of the proms and the filaments. One of my pals dropped by and he enjoyed the views too.

What eyepieces do you use with your 90mm Coronado James? My default eyepiece is my 15mm Televue plossl, which frames the full disk and proms nicely. I have the 12mm and 18mm Cemax eyepieces, but find the 18mm not quite enough, and the 12mm just a bit too much for full disk overview. I rarely 'zoom in' but if I do use the 6.5-21.5mm Pentax zoom.

Mark
On the Coronado 90 I use the Cemax 25mm, 18mm and 12mm plus a Lunt 8mm when the seeing is good on proms in single stack. I also use an Orion 16mm EF eyepiece quite a bit. The 16 and 18 probably give the best overall view for me. I need to get a 13 to 15mm fl eyepiece. A 14mm would fit right between the 16 and 12.

I would like to get a good zoom eyepiece. Is the Pentax parfocal? Do you have to refocus it when you change magnification? Does the apparent field change? I have thought about getting the Lunt zoom.

James.
