18th September 2021

Post by Montana »

Lots of proms in this emerging active region in the south east this morning. The visual view was breath-taking.

Problem was the clouds :( it was clear blue sky when I was setting up and by the time I was ready it was thick cloud. It seemed to be very high rolling fog. It would then clear again just as fast, then roll in again. I managed about 3 panels of a full disc, then had to stop for ages, then another 3 panels and so on. Hence the full disc is cobbled together over an hour or so. Taken with the Solarscope DSF100 (which was actually behaving for the first time all year) and the Grasshopper 3. For more detail click through to Flickr and use the magnifier, the proms are lovely in the prom enhanced disc.

I have taken some prom close ups but I am processing these now, not sure they will be OK. I was messing with gamma to try and get the faint threads to show through.

WooHoo!!! 🥳 Nice 👍🏻 Job Alexandra. Absolutely detailed and beautiful. You got the filaments much better than I can see them visually and more of them too. I can also see the disturbances too in your images. The proms on the SE limb came out well too.

James.

Absolutely stunning, Alexandra. There’s such wonderful detail when you drill down in Flickr.

Great to see the big gun up and running again.

Very nice shots indeed ALexandra. You conditions sounded exactly the same as mine, i'd set up the DS90 but the gaps were just too fleeting for any proper imaging. In the end I just left the scope setup and grabbed visuals instead. Some sun is better than none!

Bravo! Great job, FD's are amazingly detailed. The close-up is perfect in my opinion, this is one of the best proms I have seen at this scale.

Amazing FD Alexandra!
Fantastic details!
It was really worthy to keep trying to complete the entire disk.

How have you processed your image? Once for the disk and then separately for the proms? (eventually composing two processed images?)
And as far as I understand the solarscope is a H-alpha filter (you have won a contest with it in the past!!!). What scope did you use?

Best wishes,
Alexandros

Visual is good too!! 👍🏻 It’s faster in fleeting conditions, at least for me. ☀️ 🔭 🤠

Thanks Alexandros, yes a Solarscope DSF100 and I use it on my TEC140. The full disc is 6 images zipped together with Photoshop Photomerge. The disc and proms are together as one shot, it is much easier to do this with a doublestack as opposed to a single stack.

I have processed another this morning, the evolution of the prom region:

Thanks a lot Alexandra.

These proms have amazing details!!!! I love them!
Only with a 140mm? Native or with Barlow or is the DSF that adds magnification?

And with DS you can make both proms and disk appear with ImPPG without the annoying burned white (or black if inversed) sun's edge?

Best wishes,
Alexandros

Thanks Alexandros, the Solarscope is a fixed 100mm front etalon, so even on the TEC140 it remains a 100mm aperture. I used a 1.6x Barlow for the proms and over exposed them so that I could see the fine threadlike field lines. But, yes, with the doublestack the dynamic range between surface and prom is less so you can image both together as in the first post.

Hi, Alexandra

It’s good to see you posting again. I especially like the last images showing so much activity. I only managed one usable image on Sunday due to poor seeing.

I can relate to “ it was clear when I set up but then . . .”
It has clouded over so often after seeing a sunny sky that I’ve set up further south in my yard to give me an extra early hour with a good sky. I have my large tripod and mount set up under an all weather cover topped with an inverted white garbage container over the mount. This set up has reduced my workload and has survived a few heavy rain showers.

Lou
