September 19 2021 Observations. White Light only.

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is a short 15:45 to 16:00 UTC. The skies are overcast with thin middle level clouds. Seeing uncertain. The temperature is 77F ( 25C ) I observed from my dad's place just outside of Lowndesville South Carolina today. I posted late after arriving back home late Sunday evening. I did take the Coronado 60 but did not attempt using it because of the cloudiness. I stayed with low power using the Orion70 to try to keep a brighter image.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x ( WL )
I can see the new AR12871 just inside the SE limb. I see it as two spots with the southwestern one being larger than the northeastern one. I can see the faculae surrounding them.

SDO HMI Continuum images show another developing active region in the NE containing some small spots. I could never see it through the intervening clouds.

I cannot see even a hint of the solar granulation today.

Carpe Noctem!

James

P.S. All those little holes in the grass near the scope was caused by foraging Armadillos during the nighttime hours!

Thanks, James. Sound like you had challenging conditions.

I did. Looking through the clouds was like looking through slightly frosted glass.

Thanks for the report and scope pic James. Now it's monday morning, has been clear all night and monday looks to be sunny all day - i'm at work, typical! Why couldn't it do this over the weekend...

It’s either clouds or work that gets in the way. 😞

Armadillos are different little critters. Quite bizarre when you are not used to seeing them. Like coyotes they are fairly recent migrants to the SE U.S. coming up from Mexico and Texas. They are now common in western South Carolina and are moving into my area in the western North Carolina mountains. I haven’t seen one here yet but they have been reported. Our colder winters may slow them a bit. None has been seen at my friend’s place yet in Rock Hill SC, but they are coming!

I am glad that even in difficult conditions you were able to see something, I hope the weather will change for the better! Clear skies and thanks for the description!

You are welcome Ivan, it was certainly a challenge. I think seeing the faculae was the most difficult.
