September 24 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:55 until 15:45 UTC. The skies are clear with below average seeing. The temperature is 61F ( 16.1C )

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 64x ( Ha )
I can see all the plages on the GONG El Teide Ha image today. That's eight in all with a ninth disturbance in the NE near a small dark filament. AR12871 and AR12872 are the easiest to see and study. AR12871 in the south-central area shows a relatively small scattered plage centered on a spot with filaments scattered around it on three sides. Despite the seeing I can see the disturbance in the surrounding chromosphere that it creates. AR12872 in the north central part of the disc looks like a ring and is easy to see. I can see no filaments associated with it but the disturbance it creates in the chromosphere is apparent. AR12874 and AR12875 are seen as neighboring plages in the SW nearing the limb. I can see a couple of dark filaments north and northeast of the double plage of AR12873 in the NW quadrant.

The chromospheric mottles are easily seen despite the seeing and I can also see the thin layer of spicules surrounding the solar limb.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x ( WL )
I can see six regions on the photosphere today, however I can see spots only in two of them. AR12871 in the south shows 5 spots. Two have penumbrae. The largest one in the group's SW has three small umbrae within a common penumbra. AR12872 in the north central area has close to a dozen spots and pores. None of these are large. They are clustered are in two separate areas. Each with a different polarity. A bi-polar group. There are faculae in all four quadrants with the SDO HMI continuum images showing three pores in the SW faculae ( AR12875 ). I cannot see them visually due to the poor seeing. The NW faculae ( AR12873 ) also shows two pores to the SDO but I did not see them either.

The fine solar granulation is only barely visible today.

WooHoo, it's FRIDAY!!!

James

Thanks Maurits. I didn’t even mention the proms in my report. They are very little prom activity. Only a single one of any significance. It’s on the northwest limb.

You are welcome Arne. Good luck on a cloud-free observing/imaging day tomorrow.

Funny how when the disc is lively, the proms disappear and vice versa. At least you had an excellent view. It is raining here today so no chance :(

Me too! My wife and I went out today after a largely cloudy observing session and ate at a wonderful place in Tryon N.C. called Huckleberry's and then went antique shopping. And then we went and bought some Weihenstephaner German beer, Taylor Port wine and some local Muscadine wine. It's gonna be a good night. I don't plan to get drunk. I try to avoid that because I get sick. I drink for the taste and to relax a bit. This will last over a week for me.

I'll post today's short session shortly.

James
