September 27 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:00 to 14:53 UTC. The skies are clear. The seeing is well below average. The temperature is 60F ( 15.5C ) Despite using the larger SMII90 the active regions showed up better yesterday in the SMII60. Seeing perhaps? The SMII90 does show the filaments better however.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 50x ( Ha )
I can see about ten AR disturbances in the Chromosphere today. Only 5 of these are easy to see though. AR12879 and the larger AR12872 are in the NW. East of those lie two more disturbances that take a closer look to see. The southern hemisphere shows 4 in a curved line. I found these a bit easier to see than those in the north. They are from east to west, AR12878, unnumbered, AR12877 and AR12871. They are a lot of filaments in the area of AR12871 and the 90mm scope does well at showing them. A dark curved one crosses AR12871 at its SE end. I can see two more " rufflages " in the Chromosphere. One near the SE limb and the other near the NE limb.

I see a number of smaller prominences around the limb. Only one has any size and it's on the NE limb. I can see some vertical striated structure in it with it's southern part being a bit brighter than the rest of it. The GONG CT image shows this well.

Despite the seeing the mottles are easily seen.

Celestron NexStar 102G w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x ( WL )
Weirdly white light seems to suffer the effects of seeing worse than Ha today.

I can see seven disturbances in the Photosphere today. 5 of these are numbered systems. In the NW I can see AR12879 which shows a single pore. West of it lies AR12872 which reveals itself only as a low contrast large patch of faculae. SDO HMI shows a pore at it's southern end but I could not see it. The NE quadrant shows a patch of faculae near the limb. I can see three spot-bearing groups in the southern hemisphere. AR12878 in the SE shows two tiny spots. The SDO reveals more resolving one of the spots I see into a tiny cluster of tiny pores. I can see three small spots arranged in a southeastward pointing triangle. These belong to AR12877 now across the CLM in the SW quadrant of the solar disc. The southernmost spot is elongated in the SE direction. SW of AR12877 lies AR12871 which shows a spot with a penumbra. I can see three pores near it though the SDO shows more. I can see it's faculae too. I can see a patch of faculae near the SE limb as well.

The solar granulation is difficult to see today.

Carpe Diem!

James

Thanks James.
Difficult to see some of the smaller spots with some appearing and then disappearing so quickly too.
A new spot can be seen at the N.E.Limb on the SDO Hi-Res image where an AR has been noted previously, so maybe will liven-up.

Will look again in 10-hours to see what has developed..

Cheers
Terry

Thanks everyone,

Mark. Yes, autumn is coming with it's cooler days, longer nights and lower sun. I will lose my back deck summer observing site soon to the long shadows of the trees to the south. I'll have the retreat to the yard, garden as you Brits might say, at the side of the house and later to the front driveway to clear the lengthening shadows of the trees. I feel for all of you solar observers north of 50 degrees north latitude. The northern US, Canada, Great Britain, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Russia. Yes, you Ivan! I wish you all luck during the dark and the cold.

Terry,
Thanks for the heads-up. I'll look for your solar weather report when I awake in the morning before heading out to observe.

Goodnight

James

You did well to spot all those tiny clusters of pores :hamster:

Less than average seeing made it all the more difficult.
