September 26th - before the clouds

Post by MapleRidge »

Hi everyone...

After a week or more of cloud and rain, the skies were clear for a few hours on Sunday morning, which allowed me to get some solar imaging in. First views through the LS80T solar scope showed much more than expected based on some we updates, so I was glad to get some nice activity again.

The first image is the full disk composite through the LS80T/LS75FHa/B1800Ha and the ASI1600MM+1.6x barlow:

Switching to the double stack mod on the Orion EON 130EF, using 2 Lunt DSII etalons and the B1800Ha and the ASI290MM camera with the 1.3x barlow. Seeing was variable, on the poor side, but I was happy to get these images:

Most of the proms were small and faint, so the longer exposures needed did not get any help with the seeing, but here they are ;)

That's all from Sunday. As always, questions and comments are welcomed!

I am in the start of building a new observatory to take the place of the two smaller version that I have, and the dome with the solar equipment is one on the chopping block to facilitate the larger building going up. I may loose the use of the mount in the dome for a few weeks as construction progresses, but I will be able to piggyback the LS80T on the C14 while the upgrades are under way.

If Jupiter wasn't a prime target right now I'd take the C14 off the mount in the big observatory and setup the complete solar assembly for use. I will post some pics of the construction as time goes on and hope to have everything up and running again by late October (depending up availability of some building materials). The new Nexdome is not expected to arrive until late December, but I will put the POD dome up for the short term. The Nexdome is approximately the same dimensions as my POD dome, but has a slit that offers more wind and dew protection and opens well past the zenith to allow better access to the overhead targets for deep sky imaging. I am trying to merge the solar/deep sky into one structure/mount and keep the larger roll-off roof observatory for the C14.

A nice set of images Brian in what sounds less than ideal conditions. Sounds like the obs renovations are coming along, post a few pics up if you get chance. How is autumn coming along where you are?

Maurits and Mark...

Thanks for your comments on the images...always appreciated :bow

The observatory has been on the 'to do' list for the better part of three years...design, dimensions, and cost have always delay me getting stared before the seasons turned to winter and starting is dragged on by the spring rush at work. I finally had all the variables sorted out and started the demolition of the one building which is where the new base is going two weekends ago. Worked until dark tonight and ready to start the decking for the floor on Tuesday. A few hours each night to work on it, and hope to be done by the weekend. A friend is planning to come down next weekend and help get the walls and roof structures up, then I can do the final outside measurement and get the steel siding ordered. I will certainly post some pics as the job progresses.

As for autumn, our temperatures have returned to to the more seasonable range, but next to no colour change in any of the deciduous trees as of yet. The long range forecast is for warm weather thorough mid October, but a rapid cool down to follow and early snow in parts of the province. Who knows...I'll believe it when I see it

A great series, Brian. Showing beautiful detail and great contrast. Good luck with the new observatory, it cannot be easy to do that during COVID.

Alexandra and Franco...

Thank for your comments and feedback...always appreciated :bow

Yes, the Avatar can be updated sine the backdrop will no longer exist!

Franco, so far COVID hasn't caused many issues...but my choice of siding may be influenced by price and availability. I prefer to keep using the pre-painted white steel siding since it stays cool in the summer and lasts fore ever. The original observatory I built in 1981 is still in use as a garden shed, but the siding is still white! Has not faded much.

Thanks for your feedback Stuart...much appreciated :bow

I will post some progress the first of the week after a run on building over the weekend (need time off work to make any headway, but rain will give me the time off but but not so good for construction :? )
