September 28 2021 Observations

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 13:52 until 15:32 UTC. The skies are clear and the seeing begins as poor, improving a little as the session goes on but still remaining below average. The temperature is 73F ( 22.7C ) at 15:15 UTC. Breezy.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 50x ( Ha )
I got seven active region disturbances in the solar chromosphere today. The new AR12880 in the NE is bright and easy to see. I can also see two filaments to the south and east of it. A group of nice prominences lie on the limb east of it. I can see two plages in the NW quadrant. The westernmost is the largest and is oriented N-S. GONG ET shows two smaller ones in the vicinity but I never noticed these at all. The SW quadrant has AR12871 nearing the SW limb. It appears as a large diffuse disturbance flanked by a number of filaments to the south and southwest. NE of it lies AR12877 whose plage appears as an oval shaped ring that is easily seen. Well SE of it across the CLM in the SE quadrant is another plage that is circular and ringlike in shape. I can also make out a large low contrast disturbance just inside the SE limb. It appears as more of a ruffling in the mottles than anything. GONG shows a thin filament there but the poor seeing won't let me resolve it.

I can see a number of prominences on the limb. The NE shows a spreading hedgerow group on the NE limb. It's easy to see. I can see a single small but easy prominence on the NW limb. The SW limb shows a nice group of feathery proms. I can see 5 there. I can faintly see a loop prom on the SE limb. All viewed in double-stack.

Despite the seeing the mottling of the chromosphere caused by the spicule layer is easily seen and at 50x I can pick out the thin spicule layer on the limb as well.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x ( WL )
Today I have gotten seven visible regions on the solar photosphere. AR12880 in the NE shows a spot and two pores. The SDO 4K image shows more. I can also see it's faculae as well. I can see a single spot in the NW quadrant with a difficult pore SW of it. The SDO shows a vertical " snake eye " set of pores well NW of the aforementioned single spot. I didn't see these at all!! I somehow completely overlooked them! They would have not been exactly easy to see given the seeing conditions but should have been visible nevertheless. I can see a large patch of faculae near the NW limb. SDO HMI continuum images show a couple of really tiny pores there but given the seeing they would be very difficult or impossible to see. AR12871 near the SW limb shows a spot and a pore surrounded by vague scattered faculae. AR12877 shows 7 spots/pores to my eye. 4 are easy to see. No faculae visible. Well to the SE across the central longitudinal meridian I see a lone single spot. I can also see a large scattered patch of faculae inside the SE limb.

The granulation is invisible at session beginning but becoming soft but visible later in the session.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Thanks for the great description, I watched and filmed today too. When looking in my mod, I only saw the biggest ARs (four in total). I wondered how much James would see, and wow 7!

It takes practice my friend. The more you observe the more you will see. I am using a double stacked scope too. That helps.

Nice report James. You were warmer than us today - just rained here all day with temps in the mid teens, autumn has arrived in style!

Sounds like you had a good view, but I too have also done the same as you, spend ages looking at the Sun, come back inside, looked at GONG etc and gone 'how did I miss that!' many many times... :( so I feel for you :)

Sometimes I do miss stuff. I have missed something and after taking everything down set it back up to see if I can see what I missed. I try to be thorough, but....
