September 29 2021 Observations. Active Regions and Prominences!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 14:27 to 15:35 UTC. The skies are clear. The seeing is a bit above average! The temperature at 15:20 UT is 73F ( 22.7C )

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x, 64x and 100x ( Ha )
I got 8 active region plages today on the Ha solar disc. AR12880 in the NE stands out brightly. I can see the spots and some filaments within it. I can also see a dark filament SE of it. I can also see a thin plage to it's east very close to the limb. I can see the plages to AR12881 and AR12879? in the NW quadrant. I looked for AR12872 near the NW limb but never could see it. In the SW quadrant AR12877 stands out out brightly in the SW quadrant. I can see fine filaments and spots within it. I can see the fainter plage with embedded filament of AR12871 SW of AR12877. To the east of AR12877 very near the CLM I see the plage of AR12878. South of it near the pole lies a small filament. The eighth plage I see is a faint unnumbered one in the SE quadrant. It contains a fine curved filament.

Prominences are really nice today. For the best view of them I removed the stacking etalon for a brighter view. 100x gave the best view of them today! A group on the NE limb trails north like smoke. The NW limb has several with one really bright one that handles magnification very well. It shows a couple of small voids and the ones south of it resemble sprouts. Do prominences sprout from the Sun? The SW limb shows three nice proms in a hedgerow that show decent detail with fine tendrils connecting them. To their south is a loop prominence. The SE has a couple of small bright proms.

The mottles show up easily across the disc and the spicule layer on the limb shows up nicely at 100x. Individual spicule blades can be easily seen.

Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x and 110x ( WL )
I got 8 areas on the photosphere at 540nm. AR12880 in the NE looks splendid and detailed. Three sizeable spots with penumbrae plus two more with penumbrae lie to their west. I can see several smaller pores as well. To the east I see a patch of faculae. The SDO HMI continuum image shows two pores within it that I should have been able to see. But I missed them! :-( I bet I was distracted by the beauty of it's larger neighbor to it's west. I can see two areas in the NW quadrant. The bright faculae of AR12872 near the limb and a single small spot probably belonging to AR12881. The SW shows the impressive spot group of AR12877. I can see at least a dozen spots/pores within it. The northwesternmost spot has a penumbra that shows mottled detail within it. The SE spot has several small pores surrounding it that gives it a starlike or rough rayed appearance. AR12871 near the SW limb shows itself as a scattered patch of faculae with a single large pore within it. I can see a single pore marking the area of AR12878. I see a bright unnumbered plage just inside the SE limb.

The granulation is really easy today but not quite good enough to pick up the individual cells.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Very detailed James, Thank you! The sun is definitely looking good today, my observations were limited to your report and the morning GONG picture.

I am glad I could be of help.

Your images were great today. You are better than you give yourself credit for.

Thanks James for your detailed report.
Not much chance of any Sun-shine here as the forecasts are looking quite grim and I am taking advantage of getting-on with fitting-out the mini-obsy too..

Cheers
Terry
