Session time is from 14:15 until 15:35 UTC. The skies are mostly cloudy with high and middle level clouds. Seeing is a bit below average. The temperature is 72F ( 22.2C )

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x and 64x ( Ha )
I can see seven plages in the chromosphere today. AR12880 is seen easily in the NE with it's spots and plage. To it's east I see another plage. In the NW I can see the plage of AR12881. AR12877 is splendidly seen in the SW. It's plage shows a central line crossing between two spots like a bridge. At 15:10 UT I noticed a brightening at the northwest part of this line below the spot. It faded out within just a few minutes. It was a minor B5 flare. AR12878 is visible well to the east of AR12877. The SE quadrant shows two disturbances one just off the limb.

I notice few filaments today. Intervening clouds made them hard to see. I caught a small number in the NE, NW and in the SE. None were significant. GONG Big Bear reflects this too with only small faint filaments in small numbers.

Prominences did much better. I could easily see them in single-stack in the SE, NE, NW and SW. The proms in the SW looked awesome at 64X in the nado, even with intervening high clouds. I could see more detail in them than the GONG Big Bear image shows.

The mottles are easily seen as is the spicule layer on the limb.

Celestron NexStar 102 GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 55x ( WL )
I can see six disturbed areas in the photosphere today. Two bear spots. AR12880 in the NE looks nice and bears 4 penumbra bearing spots. There are a small number of pores with them. East of AR12880 I see a patch of faculae. The NW shows a patch of faculae very near the limb. It belongs to AR12872. AR12877 in the SW quadrant shows two spots both bearing penumbrae. The NW one also sports a light bridge splitting it's umbra into 2 sections. I see a smattering of pores between the two spots. A large patch of faculae lies at the limb SW of AR12877. It belongs to AR12871-76. I see another patch of faculae inside the SE limb.

The granulation is visible but not well.

Carpe Lumen!

James

Thanks for your report James. Sunshine and showers (in between the persistent rain) forecast for me this weekend so hoping I may sneak a view in at some point. Till then a shift at work to do first before I get there

Thank you James, I'm glad the clouds weren't a big deal. It's a little reckless to compete with them, but not when there are too many clouds. It's cloudy here, despite the good forecast.

It looks like more clouds here today than yesterday. It's almost overcast. They are thin patches though. It looks like it may be a small scope white light day.

Good luck on a view, all of you!

Mostly showers today, with sunny periods, but too risky to set up.

Here is an SDOAIA171-304 layered image of the B5 class flare I caught on the 30th of September. Even modest flares can be quite bright!

Helioviewer is awesome for stuff like this! Imaging stuff yourself is cool but I'll admit, I like easy data!

Blessings:

James

Alexandra,
Flares are awesome, barring a huge Carrington class event. You went to the seaside to get hit by rain. I hope it doesn't last so you can enjoy yourself. Are you going to be there long? Did you bring a scope?

Thanks James, I'll be here for 2 weeks so plenty of time for dry weather (I hope). I didn't bring the scope with me, I didn't want to jinx the holiday. I did bring my camera and took some pictures of the Milky Way last night as I can't see it from home. It was amazing, like clouds in the sky. I would show you an image but I can't get Deep Sky Stacker to work. The usual "I hate this computer" syndrome because I can't see why the program can't work on it. The rain seems just about stopped now, perhaps an evening walk to the beach is in order.

The online Helioviewer Solar and Heliospheric Imaging Tool which uses data from the SDO and SOHO space observatories is something I find really useful. One can manipulate, layer and make movies using the data for almost any given time. I am surprised that I don't see it used much here.

I can still see the Milky Way from my home but it seems to fade a bit year to year. It won't be long until light pollution overtakes it entirely. Now you have to head up into the mountains to get a decent view of it. However my Dad's place just outside of Lowndesville SC still has dark nighttime skies and the Milky way is easily seen from there. I can remember back in the 1970's and 1980's when the Milky Way was visible much more easily here. The encroaching light pollution is in part one reason solar has became so appealing to me. The Sun is brighter than it's competition!!

I went out west to New Mexico back in the summer of 2016. I have never seen the Milky Way so well. It indeed did look like clouds!!
