October 1 2021 Observations. Nice SW proms!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is 14:15 to 15:31 UTC. The skies are 90 percent cloudy with high and middle level clouds. The seeing is fair. The temperature is 70F ( 21.1C ). Lightly breezy,

I started out with white light figuring the clouds would inhibit me doing Ha but they thinned allowing me a decent view through the Coronado 60.

Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x and 25x ( Ha )
I was very surprised to pick out seven plages/disturbances in the chromosphere today. The NE easily shows AR12880 with it's three spots arranged in a long triangle pointing almost west. It's plage is visible without difficulty. East of it lies a faint low contrast plage with a filament to the NE and another to the NW. In the NW I can see the plage of AR12881 with a close look and a tuner tweak. AR12871 is easily seen in the SW now nearing the limb. I can see a single spot within it. AR12878 is visible well east of AR12871 but is still in the SW quadrant. It's not hard to see. Just east of the CLM in the south I see a disturbance with a single thin filament. I can also see some " ruffleage " just inside the SE limb. A nice dark filaprom is located SE of it.

Prominences are nice today. The stars of the show are on the SW limb. They are bright and easily seen in double stack. From north to south one leans south and then a bright low area of plasma and then it rises up and falls downward back to the disc with a big void underneath. It's like a warped loop! South of this splendid prom is a dimmer one. The SE limb prominences are also quite nice. A hedgerow with the center prominence being a filaprom! I can see a single irregular arc prom on the NE limb. The NW limb shows yet another group of interesting hedgerow prominences.

Despite the clouds I have no trouble picking up the chromospheric mottles.

Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x and 50x ( WL )
I can see 5 areas of activity on the photosphere today. AR12880 in the NE shows a triangle of spots arranged in a triangle pointing almost west. All three spots bear a penumbra. The largest spot shows the penumbra broken into two pieces with the smaller piece looking S shaped. It surprisingly in the SDO HMI continuum image doesn't look like this at all. The smaller piece being fragmented into 4 smaller pieces beyond the resolution of my small telescope. I can see no faculae to this system. I can pick out some low contrast faculae in the NW associated with AR12881. I see no spots or pores within it. The SW quadrant shows AR12871 with three spots amid bright faculae. the faculae stretches between the spots. Both the northern and southern spots possess penumbrae. A small spot is seen just to the east of the northernmost bigger one. A faint patch of faculae is seen south of AR12871. I see no spots or pores there. The SE quadrant shows a large patch of faculae. I see no spots or pores within it.

The fine solar granulation is visible but soft.

The music for my session today is classical music on KUSC. It's probably the best classical station I have found yet.

What a detailed report, James, thanks! Proms, judging by your report, the GONG ha images and Simon's gorgeous pics are amazing.
We again had a good forecast, and I thought that I could shoot something for my 40th birthday, but the weather did not make such a gift.

Hi

I briefly had the RuMak PST mod out on the Ioptron mount.

There were some nice big proms and surface details visible.

Unfortunately windy and Ioptron on tripod not as steady as EQ5 on concreted in steel pier.

Easier to use the bino-viewers as horizontal.

Thanks for the report.

Andrew.

Thank you James.
Some severe weather expected over the next few days (ex Hurricane-Victor now storm) and not sure which way it is definitely heading over the U.K., so will continue with the electrics and fitting-out of the mini-observatory instead.

Maurits,
You are welcome.

Ivan,
You are welcome. Simon's images were certainly awesome! October 2nd is my 57th birthday so we're close! Maybe the 2nd will be sunny for you and give you a belated birthday gift. And happy 40th birthday!

Terry,
I hope the storms pass you by.

Eric,
I enjoyed your images. You and your Mexican comrade ( Rainer ) have some of the finest monochrome images around!

James

HAPPY BIRTHDAY James and to Ivan for yesterday :hamster: :hamster: :hamster:

Thank you for the great description as it cheered my morning. My goodness, it couldn't rain any harder here, a real hurricane.

Alexandra,
Thank you my dear. I'm getting old. I am glad you enjoyed my descriptions. I try to keep them clear and easy to read but sometimes they still come up a bit choppy.

Sorry about all the rain. Hopefully the sun will find you soon.

Blessings:
James
