October 2 2021 Observations. Nice SW prom action!

Post by DeepSolar64 »

Session time is from 16:15 to 17:45 UTC. The skies are partly cloudy with the seeing just below average. The temperature is 75F ( 23.8C ). Light breeze.

Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x, 50x, 64x and 89x ( Ha )
I can see 5 disturbances in the chromosphere today. AR12880 is located in the NE but is nearing the Central Longitudinal Meridian. I can see three spots arranged in a NW pointing triangle with a spotty sparse plage between them. Two thin filaments can be seen among it's plage between the spots. I can also pick up two larger filaments well NE of AR12880. A single small filament is located beyond the CLM in the NW quadrant. GONG BB also picks up the ruffled disturbance of AR12881 in the NW but I did not notice it at all. I notice AR12877 in the SW very near the limb only by a single spot. I noticed nothing else. AR12878 is noticed only as a pale low contrast plage SE of AR12877. A slight disturbance is visible at the CLM in the south. What gave it away is the sideways V shaped filament. Otherwise I would have never noticed it. I see another vague disturbance in the SE quadrant with three easy attending filaments. One is long N-S. Due south is another easy filament. There is also a couple of filaments above the south pole.

Prominences rule the Sun today! A complex rapidly evolving group is on the SW limb below the receding AR12877. I see three promenences there. A small low one is the northernmost with a tall active center prom and a smaller southward-leaning prom to the south. It looks to be slightly detached from the disc and the GONG Big Bear image suggests this too. At sessions beginning the bigger central prom had a more spread out form changing into a form that around 17:00UT started to resemble a flightless bird complete with an eye, sharp long beak pointing north and two stubby legs. It's the Penguin Prom!!I Earlier on, see a couple of voids/bubbles near the base. One is quite large but they change and disappear within 10 minutes! Within 20 minutes the upper void ( eye ) starts to fade and the beak stretches out and forms another void within it. I can also see a faint streamer ahead of the " birds " beak as if it is spitting. Rapidly a bright pearl-like nodule of plasma forms/coalesces over/past the lower northern prom at/near the end of the spit streamer. I was surprised how bright it was despite it's small size. I would guess it smaller than the Earth. Within a minute it started to elongate becoming slightly dimmer and then resembled a small comet with the head nearest the Sun. Within a couple of minutes it descended into the spicule layer and into the chromosphere becoming completely absorbed. It was thrilling to watch. The eye can see the same motion seen in solar features like image animations can. Just at a much slower rate of speed. Those here who draw solar features by hard realize they must draw quickly because the features change! I can also see prominences on the SE limb with a void under one of them. The NE shows a couple of proms that are rough loops. The NW shows a row of proms with a couple that appear to be detached from the disc.

The mottles are easily seen across the solar disc and the spicule layer can be seen circling the limb as well.

Celestron NexStar 102 GT w/Altair wedge and 540nm filter. 62.5x ( WL )
I got 4 disturbances on the photosphere today. AR12880 in the NE appears as three easy spots all possessing penumbrae. The larger one in the NW tip of the triangular group has a double umbra. The other two spots have small irregular umbrae. I can see a couple of small pores in the vicinity. I can see AR12877 almost at the SW limb. I see two spots with the larger one nearest the limb illustrating the Wilson Effect very well. Bright faculae are seen connecting the two spots. I can barely pick out the faculae of AR12878 just to the SE of AR12877. I see no spots or pores there. I also can see a large scattered patch of faculae in the SE quad. I see no spots or pores there.

The fine granulation is visible but soft.

Carpe Noctem!

James

James:
Thanks for the report and the nice photo of the setup including your cat friend.
I also got the big prominence before it clouded all over.
Best regards.
Eric.

Eric,
That was a really nice prom wasn't it!? It's exciting watching it change so quickly.

Blessings:

James

Fantastic! the penguin prom sounds amazing, you should have sketched it :) I wonder if you were seeing plasma bubbles forming (voids). Very interesting indeed :hamster:

Sunny here AM but back to raining again PM. Went down to the beach today but there were loads of people and they had already picked it clean of fossils. We need to get up earlier tomorrow ;) Also managed to get the computer working again so I am busy processing the Milky Way :)

Alexandra,
It was an awesome prom that was quickly changing. Someone would have had to sketch quickly.

What kind of fossils? Shark teeth?

James

We go hunting ammonites and belomonites in Filey. All part of the same Jurassic coast :)

What a poetic account, James. I also liked the comparison with the penguins. We still have clouds.
