October 9 2021 Observations. Awesome AR12882!
Session time is from 14:00 to 15:35 UTC. The skies are mostly clear. The seeing is very good! The temperature is 66F ( 18.8C )
This is the first time I have observed using the scopes since Saturday a week ago because of clouds and heavy rains. I did get a couple of quick WL solar binocular observations in early week though. So this is the first good look I have gotten of AR12882 since it came onto the disc last Sunday.
Coronado SolarMax II 60 DS. 16x, 21.5x, 25x, 40x and 50x ( Ha )
I could with considerable effort pick out 8 plages/active regions today in the chromosphere. That of AR12882 located in the NE not far off the CLM is by far the easiest to see. It's plage for the most part lies NE of the major spot. I can see a group of thin filaments north of the large SE spot interlaced with the other spots north of the big one. I can see a couple of small difficult plage disturbances NW of AR12882. I can also see the disturbance of AR12880 at the NW limb. I can see two plages in the SE. The southernmost one has a small dark filament embedded in it. Just west of the Central Longitudinal Meridian in the south I see a small plage. It's not difficult to see. I can also see some ruffleage in the chromosphere near the SW limb. I would have never been able to see some of these if the seeing and transparency would have been less.
I can see a number of filaments on the disc besides ones associated with plages. The NE and NW shows several with three in the NW being quite dark and easy to see. The most striking though is two arcs of filaments in the south and southwest. Tuned in, they are obvious.
Going to single stack I see a number of prominences on the limb. Several faint ones on the NE limb including one tall southward leaning thin prom. One small fairly bright one is north of it. The NW has a single bent faint one and the SW has 4 with three being right together in the far south.
The mottles are easy and at 50x in single stack I can see the thin spicule layer on the limb.
Orion 70mm Solar Telescope. 25x, 50x, 62.5x and 100x. ( WL )
There are 7 disturbances in the photosphere today. AR12882 nearing the north center area of the disc is spectacular for such a small aperture. The largest spot in the SE part of the group shows surprising detail. I can easily see the mottled rayed structure of the penumbra!! The umbra shows an indention in it's SE side and also shows a roughness to it's edge. I can actually see irregularities in the edge of the penumbra where the granules interact with it! The spots to it's north and NW are an intermingling of pores, irregular spots enlaced in penumbrae. I am totally blown away by the detail seen in such a small aperture. While I cannot cleanly pick up the individual granules I can see a sort of coarseness to the granulation. The limits are set today by the small aperture and NOT the seeing. I can see a snakeyes set of small pores well to the NW of AR12882 marking the location of a plage seen there in Ha. Very near the NW limb I can see the faculae of AR12880. The SW limb shows a patch of faculae. The south central has a small group of small spots/ pores. 6 in all. Ha shows a plage here as well. The SE limb shows twin patches of faculae. SDO 4K high rez imagery shows a very tiny pore between them. I did not see it.
Within 30 minutes of me concluding the session clouds had covered the entire sky!
Seize the Beer!!

Hi James,
I'm glad you were able to watch today. I thought your observations at WL were particularly good.

Very detailed report James and of course AR2882 is well in action now for flares and a CME today - unsurprisingly.

Thanks vm

Re: October 9 2021 Observations. Awesome AR12882!
Ivan,
I was really impressed by the performance of the little Orion70 today. Normally it takes my bigger Celestron 102 to get that kind of detail and even then I have to at least have fair seeing. I should have used the 102 today for I am sure the detail I would have seen would have been greater. I figured seeing would suck due to the passing bad weather system we have had over us for the last week and chose the smaller setup. Still I was not disappointed by either scope.
Terry,
I wonder if the CME will have any affect on the polar aurorae?
Thanks
James

Interesting question James.
As i direct aim at Earth, I would have thought that both polar regions would likely be affected, but whether in day-light or otherwise, I don't want to guess...

I have only seen the Northern Lights once in my life. They are very rare at 35 north latitude. I would love to see them again.

I, at 51-degs N have seen them a couple of times, but is still a rare-event here.
I understand that today (11th) is the strike-day, but whether during day-light or otherwise is not yet known to me..
Cheers
