Oct.10, 2021 FD and 2882

Post by Astrophil »

Today’s images again used the Questar and Solar Spectrum filter. Stopped down to f/20, and with a focal reducer, the full disk could be imaged. At f/20 the etalon produced a small centered on band (dark) region which turned into a ring as it was heated. I think this is what I was seeing in the flat frames. Please let me know if I’m mistaken. By increasing the temperature ring expanded and the center went off band. A compromise in temperature was made to best image the disk at that focal ratio. It still needs work.

Phil

Phil,
Did you notice that a filament emerges from where there is a " chip " out of the umbra?

Nice work!

James

Exceptionally beautiful Phil, the patterning in the swirl coming round into the smaller shot is the most photogenic I have ever seen :bow :bow :hamster:

Nice shots Phil! Does this expanding annulus only occur when using the focal reducer for full disk?

Mark, I haven’t noticed the ring until trying the disk shots with the reducer. Usually a Powermate is employed for closeups and no ring is seen with or without a reducer. I’ll investigate further.

Phil
