October 10 2021 Observations. AR12882!!
Session time is from 15:15 to 17:00 UTC. The skies are clear. Although the seeing is not quite as good as yesterday it is still well above average for about 30 minutes into the session falling to probably a bit below average at sessions end as the temperature rapidly warms up. The temperature mid-session is 70F ( 21.1C )
Coronado SolarMax II 90 DS. 32x, 44.5x, 64x, and 100x ( Ha )
I can see 6 plages in the chromosphere today. That of AR12882 now just across the CLM in the north is by far the most spectacular. It's bright plage winds north and west above the large spot visible there. I can also see 4 filaments north, south, east and west of the spot. The easiest to see of these are the northern and western ones. The western one curves around a smaller spot located there. The chromosphere around the group is visibly disturbed. Well NW of AR12882 I see another smaller plage approaching the limb. I see two areas in the SW. A bright but small plage and closer to the limb a lot of ruffleage. The SE shows two plages with the southernmost of these being the easiest to see.
A number of filaments are seen. Two north and northeast of AR12882. Another at the NE limb and a dark one near the NW limb. The south has a whole chain of filaments going from just east of due south just above the south pole to the SW limb. There's 6 of them in all!
Prominences are few. The one I noticed most is a bright one on the NW limb.I noticed when I changed the tuning on the internal etalon ( SS ) that I could only see the center part of the prom with the outer part becoming almost transparent. Tune it back and the whole prom pops back into view. It's as if I can tune into a deeper area into the prominence. I can only guess.
The mottling of the chromosphere is really easily seen and I can also see the limb spicule layer with the emergent macro-spicules really standing out above the others.
Celestron NexStar 102GT w/Altair wedge using the 540nm filter. 55x, 83x, 110x and 166.5x ( WL )
During the early part of the session the seeing allowed a really good view at 540nm. AR12882 now in the NW quadrant showed incredible detail. Detail is the spot was downright easy. It exceeds what I can see in the SDO4K image! The radiating pattern in the penumbra really stands out. I can also easily see a " chip " out of the eastern side of the umbra. The edges of the umbra are visibly rough. The umbra appears really black with not a hint of light bridges. The edges of the penumbra are easily seen to be uneven, where the granules border up against it. The individual granules are indeed visible. They are not that difficult at all at the beginning of the session. It still surprises me how well a 4" instrument can show these. Granulation is one main reason I desire a bigger 6" class refractor. The little Orion70 did really well for it's size yesterday but it still is no match for the Celestron 102 in good seeing. The spots to the north and Northwest of the larger one show up really well in AR12882 with the C102.
Well to the NW of AR12882 approaching the limb I see another spot group. I see six small spots or pores here. Faculae can be seen faintly. I can see a large broad patch of faculae near the SW limb. The westernmost part nearest the limb is easiest to see. I see no spots or pores here. Just east of the large facula I see a small group of three small spots. I can see a couple of vague faculae in the SE. Under high power I can see two tine pores in the southernmost one. They would be invisible in the Orion70 if I would have used it. They are tiny, barely bigger than a granule! They are visible in the 4K SDO HMI continuum images.
That makes 6 areas I could see on the photosphere but AR12882 in white light certainly stole the show today!

Nicely detailed, as usual, James. Too much haze here.

I have managed to get a low power white light view so far through the clouds. I'm still hoping for a clearing or thinner clouds.
Thanks Stu. I hope your haze clears.

Very detailed James, thanks. It seemed to me that you have been watching with particular passion in the last couple of days. All these days we have excellent weather without clouds, but visibility is poor.

Ivan,
I guess I have been making up for lost time. Outside of a couple of binocular observations I was clouded out for a week!
